Nigeria's preparations for the 2026 Women's Africa Cup of Nations have gathered momentum after Super Falcons head coach Justine Madugu unveiled a 23-player squad for the team's upcoming international friendly matches against Senegal Women's National Football Team.

Leading the squad are captain Rasheedat Ajibade, first-choice goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie, and veteran striker Asisat Oshoala, as Nigeria continues its build-up toward another continental title challenge.

The squad announcement, confirmed by the Nigeria Football Federation through its Director of Communications, Ademola Olajire, combines experienced internationals with emerging talents as Madugu seeks to fine-tune his team ahead of the continental showpiece.

Experienced Stars Return

Among the notable inclusions is experienced midfielder Ngozi Okobi-Okeoghene, who returns to the national team setup alongside seasoned forward Francisca Ordega and in-form striker Gift Monday.

Their inclusion provides additional depth and leadership to a squad already boasting a blend of youth and experience.

Madugu's selection reflects his intention to assess various tactical combinations while maintaining the core of a team that remains one of Africa's strongest women's football sides.

Opportunities for Emerging Talents

The coach also extended invitations to several players looking to establish themselves at the international level.

Belarus-based forward Blessing Nkor earned a call-up following impressive performances abroad, while Turkey-based midfielder Kafayat Shittu was also rewarded with a place in the squad.

Home-based goalkeeper Anderline Mgbechi received an opportunity to compete for a place in the team, while defenders Sikiratu Isah, Rofiat Imuran and Oluwatosin Demehin were also included.

The squad further features several established internationals, including Halimatu Ayinde, Toni Payne, Jennifer Echegini, Christy Ucheibe, Shukurat Oladipo and Rinsola Babajide.

Remo Stars Stadium to Host Two-Match Series

The Super Falcons will face Senegal's Lionesses of Teranga in a two-match friendly series at the Remo Stars Sports Complex.

The first encounter is scheduled for June 6, while the second match will take place on June 8.

The fixtures are expected to provide valuable preparation for both teams as they gear up for the next edition of the Women's Africa Cup of Nations.

For Madugu, the matches offer an opportunity to assess player fitness, test tactical systems, and strengthen team chemistry ahead of a demanding tournament campaign.

Focus Shifts to WAFCON 2026

The friendlies form an important part of Nigeria's preparations for the upcoming 2026 Women's Africa Cup of Nations, scheduled to hold between July 25 and August 16.

Senegal have been drawn in Group A alongside host nation Morocco, Algeria and Kenya.

Nigeria, meanwhile, will compete in Group C against Egypt, Zambia and tournament debutants Malawi.

As 10-time African champions, the Super Falcons will enter the competition among the favourites to lift the trophy once again.

Beyond continental glory, the stakes are even higher, as the tournament will also serve as the qualification pathway for the 2027 FIFA Women's World Cup.

With key stars available and a mix of experience and youthful energy within the squad, the upcoming friendlies against Senegal will offer an early indication of Nigeria's readiness for the challenges that lie ahead.
