The Serbian tennis icon was among the high-profile guests at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya on Sunday and was given the honour of waving the chequered flag as Hamilton crossed the finish line to claim his 106th Formula One race win. The victory was particularly significant as it marked Hamilton’s first triumph since joining Ferrari, ending months of anticipation surrounding one of the sport’s most talked-about moves.
However, according to reports from Formula One photographer Kym Illman, Djokovic’s day nearly got off to an embarrassing start after he reportedly arrived at the circuit without the accreditation pass required to gain entry.
Sharing details of the incident, Illman said:
“Novak Djokovic arrived early for race day this morning. However, the tennis great had forgotten his pass, leaving him temporarily stranded outside the gates.
“In the end, one member of his entourage lent Novak their credential to gain entry, before making the trip back to the car to collect his pass to use themselves.”
The brief setback was eventually resolved, allowing Djokovic to enter the venue and take part in the celebrations. The episode also served as a reminder that even globally recognised sporting figures are still expected to comply with strict event security protocols.
Two Sporting Greats Share a Memorable Moment
The image of Djokovic waving the chequered flag as Hamilton powered to victory carried symbolic significance, with both athletes regarded among the greatest competitors in their respective sports.
Djokovic remains the most successful men's singles player in Grand Slam history with 24 major titles, while Hamilton's latest success further strengthened his status as one of Formula One’s all-time greats. The British driver now has 106 race victories to his name and shares the record of seven world championships with Formula One legend Michael Schumacher.
Both men have also defied expectations through their longevity, continuing to compete at elite level despite being in the latter stages of their careers.
Hamilton Delivers Ferrari Breakthrough
While Djokovic’s forgotten pass generated headlines off the track, Hamilton’s performance was the main story on it.
The seven-time world champion produced a commanding drive to deliver Ferrari its long-awaited breakthrough victory since his arrival at the Italian team. The result capped months of hard work and adaptation following one of the most high-profile transfers in Formula One history.
An emotional Hamilton paid tribute to Ferrari's staff, management, and passionate supporters after climbing to the top step of the podium.
“First I have to start and say a huge 'grazie' to everyone here, everyone back at the factory, and to Fred [Vasseur] for believing in me and bringing me to this team,” Hamilton said.
“I started out a dream last year which seemed almost impossible during my time last year. I nearly gave up hope, but the team continued to lift me up. We made so many changes and improvements and, on top of that, we have just the greatest fanbase a sportsman could ever ask for. So thank you, thank you to everybody.”
The British driver described the victory as one of the most special moments of his illustrious career, having grown up watching Ferrari dominate Formula One.
“They're all special in their own way, but this one is something else. I watched Ferrari have all their success when I was younger, watched it on the TV, and then when I've been racing here I've watched the screens and wondered what it would be like to win in that car.
“And now it's come. Everyone worked so hard for it and truly deserves it, I'm forever grateful to them. This is just the first, I hope of many.”
Hamilton also praised the team’s flawless execution throughout the race, highlighting Ferrari’s strategy and pit crew performance as key factors behind the victory.
“Great pit stops today, great strategy. The car felt fantastic. Forza Ferrari!”
For Hamilton, the victory represents more than just another addition to his record-breaking career. It signals the beginning of a new chapter with Formula One’s most iconic team and offers Ferrari supporters renewed hope that more success could follow in the months ahead.
