Speaking on what transformed his career trajectory in an interview with TEMITOPE ADETUNJI, Johnson traced his breakthrough to a strategic repositioning of his craft.
“The game changed for me when I began operating as a mainstream artiste rather than just a regular live band performer,” he said. “The shift happened when I started creating my own songs and developing a unique style of entertainment. This brought me greater recognition and allowed me to offer much more than the typical live band experience at events.”
He explained that his uniqueness lies in how he bridges two worlds—original music and live band performance—into a single identity that clients can book for premium entertainment experiences.
“Unlike regular live bands, whose performances are often limited to singing popular songs by other artistes, I do that and also perform my own customised songs at events,” he added. “In essence, clients get the best of both worlds: an artiste and a live band in one personality.”
The crowd connection behind his signature performance style
One of Segun Johnson’s most recognisable traits is his energetic, call-and-response performance style that dominates owambe celebrations and high-profile gatherings. For him, it was not a calculated invention but a natural extension of years spent performing covers in live bands.
“My call-and-response style was inspired years ago when I was still performing in the traditional live band format,” he said. “As a live band performer, I sang a wide range of songs by different artistes… The crowd always responded positively and enjoyed the performances.”
That interaction, he explained, became the foundation for his brand today.
“That experience made me realise that my greatest strength is my ability to connect with and engage audiences,” he said. “As a result, I decided to build my brand around that strength by developing a unique call-and-response style that encourages audience participation.”
Recognition gap between live bands and mainstream artists
Despite his growing popularity, Johnson acknowledged a longstanding perception issue in the entertainment industry: live band performers are often undervalued compared to recording artistes.
“This is very true. I discovered it firsthand when I began operating as a mainstream artiste,” he said. “Mainstream artistes bring originality through their own songs and unique style of performance… making their contribution distinct and more recognisable.”
For him, recognition is tied closely to authorship and originality in music creation, something he believes sets mainstream performers apart.
Responding to criticism of “noise” and crowd control
Like many viral performers, Johnson has faced scepticism from critics who dismiss his style as spectacle rather than music. Some have described his performances as “noise and crowd manipulation,” a claim he does not take personally.
“Most critics have never witnessed my performance live,” he responded. “Some have only seen me perform at events where I was engaged solely as a guest artiste, rather than as the main live band act.”
He insists his consistency in bookings is not accidental but rooted in trust built over years with clients.
“The secret to my consistent patronage lies in the confidence that event planners and clients have in my craft,” he said. “They have come to know me as someone who executes both the live band and artistry aspects of entertainment with excellence, professionalism, and consistency.”
Standing out in a crowded live entertainment space
With growing competition in Nigeria’s live performance scene, some critics argue his dominance is less about innovation and more about lack of strong alternatives. Johnson strongly disagrees.
“I believe that dominance is largely due to the artistry that most conventional live bands lack,” he said. “My ability to combine the creativity and originality of an artiste with the energy and versatility of a live band sets me apart.”
Beyond weddings: building an international brand
Though widely associated with weddings and private celebrations, Johnson insists his career extends far beyond Nigeria’s party circuit. According to him, international exposure has been a consistent part of his journey.
“I have performed at numerous international shows and tours and have won several awards in Canada, the United Kingdom, and Dubai (United Arab Emirates),” he said. “I am currently in Canada for an artiste tour, just as I have consistently done over the past three years.”
He added that social media often amplifies only one side of his career—wedding performances—creating a narrowed public perception.
Success, pressure, and personal insecurities
On whether his success is driven more by talent or market understanding, Johnson believes both factors are essential.
“I believe my success can be attributed to both hard work and the appropriate tailoring of my performances toward premium clients,” he said.
Despite his energetic public persona, he revealed a quieter, more introverted side that contrasts sharply with his stage presence.
“The biggest insecurity is fame,” he admitted. “Unlike what people think about fame, I am more of an introvert and I rarely step out or want to be seen.”
Social media, sustainability, and the future of live performance
With viral clips playing a major role in boosting visibility for entertainers, Johnson acknowledged the platform’s importance but downplayed its dominance in his business structure.
“If social media were to disappear, my sustainability would remain intact due to the strong clientele I have built over the years,” he said. “The business itself is built on a strong and consistent client base both in Nigeria and overseas.”
He also addressed the rising influence of DJs and hypemen in live events, stating that he does not see them as a threat.
“I do not see DJs and hypemen as competition because I function in two roles,” he explained. “My songs are already household melodies to the crowd.”
The philosophy behind repetition and originality
On whether repetition weakens live performance, Johnson was clear in his stance.
“Repetition in live music is a weakness,” he said, noting that mainstream artistes have an advantage in constantly releasing new material.
For him, however, originality is not just about newness but creativity in execution.
“Originality works hand in hand with creativity. This is the easiest part of performance for me because creativity is what birthed my style as an entertainer.”
