Bengaluru-based SatSure Analytics has secured a grant of 246 million rupees ($2.57 million) from Indian National Space Promotion and Authorization Center, India's space sector regulator, to develop advanced artificial intelligence models for Earth observation.
The funding forms part of a broader national strategy aimed at building sovereign AI capabilities and strengthening India's position in the rapidly evolving space technology ecosystem.
Building AI That Understands India
The grant will support the development of large-scale Earth observation models trained on satellite and drone-generated data specific to India’s geography and environmental conditions.
Unlike many global AI models, which are often trained on broad datasets and may struggle to accurately interpret local characteristics, SatSure’s approach seeks to create systems tailored to India's unique landscape.
The company plans to incorporate a wide range of datasets, including monsoon behaviour, agricultural patterns, urban growth, land-use changes, and environmental indicators.
By grounding AI systems in locally relevant data, researchers hope to significantly improve accuracy and decision-making across sectors that rely on geospatial intelligence.
The resulting models could be applied in industries ranging from infrastructure planning and financial services to agriculture, environmental management, and disaster preparedness.
Earth Observation Becomes Strategic Infrastructure
The investment reflects a growing global trend as governments increasingly view Earth observation and AI-driven geospatial intelligence as strategic assets.
Satellite-derived information has become essential for monitoring climate change, managing natural disasters, improving food security, tracking infrastructure development, and supporting national security objectives.
Rather than treating satellite analytics as isolated projects, countries are now investing in reusable intelligence platforms capable of generating insights across multiple sectors.
According to SatSure's Co-founder and Chief Technology Officer, Rashmit Singh Sukhmani, the future of Earth observation lies in building foundational intelligence systems that can serve a wide range of applications.
“Earth observation is moving from project-specific analytics to reusable intelligence infrastructure,” he said.
He added that locally trained AI models could significantly improve the quality of decision-making by better reflecting India's environmental realities.
“These models could help build decision-making systems that better reflect India's geography, climate dynamics, agricultural diversity and infrastructure requirements,” Sukhmani stated.
India Expands Role for Private Space Companies
The funding also highlights India's efforts to expand private-sector participation in an industry that was historically dominated by the state-run Indian Space Research Organisation.
Over the past few years, the Indian government has introduced reforms aimed at opening the space sector to startups and private companies, encouraging innovation and commercial investment.
As part of that strategy, India launched a 10-billion-rupee support fund designed to help emerging space companies scale their operations, develop new technologies, and compete globally.
The latest grant to SatSure aligns with that broader vision by supporting indigenous capabilities in both artificial intelligence and satellite technology.
Supporting India's Commercial Satellite Ambitions
Beyond AI model development, the funding will also support SatSure's participation in a national partnership programme focused on building a commercial satellite constellation.
Such constellations consist of multiple satellites working together to provide continuous Earth observation coverage, enabling more frequent data collection and near real-time monitoring capabilities.
Industry experts view these networks as critical infrastructure for next-generation climate monitoring, agriculture management, urban planning, and emergency response systems.
Strengthening India's Sovereign Technology Ecosystem
The grant underscores India's determination to build strategic technologies domestically at a time when nations are increasingly prioritising digital sovereignty.
By combining satellite data, drone intelligence, and artificial intelligence models designed specifically for local conditions, SatSure aims to create a new generation of Earth observation tools capable of delivering insights that are more accurate, relevant, and scalable.
