Nollywood actor and filmmaker Kunle Afod has weighed in on what he sees as a growing imbalance in how Nigerians engage with information online, particularly on social media.

In a message shared on his Instagram page, Afod expressed concern that public attention is often drawn away from issues that carry real societal weight, only to be replaced by trending gossip or fleeting controversies.

He did not point to any specific incident or individual, but his comments reflected a broader frustration with how quickly online conversations shift focus.

According to him, this pattern weakens sustained public engagement with important matters. He suggested that many people invest more energy in entertainment-driven discussions than in conversations that could contribute to meaningful national progress.

The actor’s remarks also touch on a wider debate about the influence of social media on public discourse in Nigeria, where trending topics can dominate attention for a short period before disappearing just as quickly.

As he put it in his own words:

“Nigerians have a way of ignoring important issues the moment they find something or someone to gossip about.”

“We often give more attention to distractions than to matters that truly deserve our focus. It’s time to change that.”

His comments have since added to ongoing conversations about how digital culture shapes priorities, and whether online attention spans are becoming too fragmented to sustain meaningful civic dialogue.
