A temporary disruption affecting Meta's major social media platforms caused inconvenience for thousands of users on Friday, with Facebook and Instagram experiencing widespread service issues for several hours before operations gradually returned to normal.

The outage, which began around 9:20 a.m. ET, triggered a surge in user complaints across multiple regions, prompting concerns among users who were unable to access certain features or experienced interruptions while using the platforms.

Earlier in the day, a Meta spokesperson acknowledged the problem and assured users that the company was addressing the issue.

"Meta was working to fix the issue."

The disruption was closely monitored by outage-tracking platform Downdetector, which compiles user-submitted reports and status updates from various sources to identify service interruptions in real time.

At the height of the outage, Downdetector recorded more than 113,000 reports from Facebook users experiencing problems. Instagram was also affected, with approximately 10,000 reports submitted during the peak period, highlighting the scale of the disruption across Meta's ecosystem.

While the outage sparked widespread discussion online, service levels appeared to improve steadily as the morning progressed. By 11:45 a.m. ET, reports of problems on both Facebook and Instagram had fallen significantly, suggesting that the company had largely restored functionality for most users.

Meta did not immediately respond to requests for further details regarding the cause of the outage, leaving questions unanswered about what triggered the temporary service interruption.

Industry observers note that even brief outages on Meta-owned platforms can have far-reaching effects, given the billions of users who rely on Facebook and Instagram daily for communication, business activities, content sharing, and advertising.

Downdetector cautioned that its figures are based on user-generated reports and may not represent the total number of affected users. As a result, the actual scale of the disruption could be either higher or lower than the reported figures.

Although the outage was relatively short-lived, it once again underscored the dependence of individuals, businesses, and content creators on large social media platforms and the significant impact service interruptions can have when they occur.
