MultiChoice, CANAL+ Expand Telenovela Offering for Nigerian Viewers with New Novelas+ Channels

Nigerian viewers' enduring love for captivating drama series has received a major boost as MultiChoice, in partnership with CANAL+, unveils plans to launch dedicated telenovela channels across Africa.

The media company announced the introduction of two new channels under the Novelas+ brand, one in English and the other in Portuguese, aimed at delivering a wider selection of globally acclaimed telenovelas to audiences across the continent. The channels are scheduled to officially launch on July 1.

Speaking on the development, Atinuke Ngozi Babatunde, Executive Head of Content and West Africa Channels at MultiChoice Nigeria, highlighted the strong connection Nigerian audiences have built with the telenovela genre over the years.

“Nigerian audiences have long had a strong affinity for emotionally rich telenovelas. We are delighted to bring all the compelling flavours of these global series to viewers, carefully curated and localized for our Nigerian audiences,” she said.

The launch underscores MultiChoice's commitment to expanding entertainment options for subscribers by providing content that resonates with local tastes while showcasing stories from diverse cultures around the world.

According to the company, the new channels will feature a rich lineup of telenovelas sourced from some of the world's most successful television markets, including Latin America, the United States, Portugal, and Turkey. These productions are known for their gripping storylines, emotional depth, family-centered narratives, romance, suspense, and dramatic plot twists that have earned them loyal followings globally.

The move also builds on the success of Novelas TV, which is being rebranded as Novelas+. The channel has already established itself as the leading television destination for telenovelas in French-speaking Africa, attracting a large and dedicated audience across the region.

Industry observers believe the expansion into English and Portuguese-speaking markets reflects the growing demand for serialized drama content across Africa, particularly among viewers seeking engaging, character-driven storytelling.

With the rollout of the new channels, audiences in Nigeria and other African countries can expect an even broader range of premium telenovela content, further cementing the genre's popularity and strengthening MultiChoice and CANAL+'s presence in the continent's entertainment landscape.
