Nollywood actress and filmmaker Funke Akindele has earned commendation from the National Orientation Agency (NOA) for using her latest film, Behind The Scenes, to raise awareness about the proper handling of Nigeria’s national currency.

The movie, which premiered in December 2025, examines the emotional and financial burdens that often accompany family and personal responsibilities. Beyond its central storyline, the film also delivers a subtle but powerful message on the importance of respecting the naira and discouraging practices that violate the law.

One of the film’s standout scenes features government officials interrupting a social gathering just as guests are preparing to spray cash on celebrants. The scene serves as a reminder that spraying, mutilating, or trampling on naira notes constitutes an offence under Nigerian law.

The message comes at a time when authorities have intensified efforts to protect the integrity of the national currency. In recent months, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has taken action against several public figures accused of abusing banknotes at parties and social events.

Recognising the educational value of the film, the NOA praised Akindele for leveraging her influence and platform to promote civic responsibility among Nigerians.

In a statement issued on June 4, 2026, and signed by the agency’s Director-General, Lanre Issa-Onilu, the NOA described the actress’s approach as both patriotic and impactful.

“The NOA commends you for your recently released movie Behind the Scenes, particularly for the thoughtful and patriotic inclusion of a message promoting respect for the national currency. We wish to acknowledge you as a role model and applaud your deliberate effort to highlight the importance of preserving the dignity of our national currency by discouraging the practice of spraying and trampling on the naira at public functions.”

The agency noted that public figures, especially those in the entertainment industry, play a critical role in influencing societal attitudes and behaviours. According to the NOA, films and other creative works have become powerful tools for educating citizens and encouraging positive social values.

The statement further highlighted the symbolic importance of the naira, describing it as more than just a means of exchange.

“As you are aware, the naira is not merely a medium of exchange but a symbol of our national sovereignty and collective identity. Your influence as a leading figure in Nigeria’s creative industry has significantly amplified this message, contributing to public awareness and behavioural change in an engaging and impactful way.”

The agency also expressed appreciation for Akindele’s contribution to national reorientation efforts and pledged continued support for initiatives that promote responsible citizenship and national development.

According to the NOA, Akindele’s work demonstrates how storytelling can extend beyond entertainment to address important social issues. The agency maintained that the film industry remains one of the most effective channels for shaping public consciousness, fostering patriotism, and encouraging respect for national symbols.

The recognition adds to the growing conversation around the role of celebrities and filmmakers in supporting public education campaigns, particularly on issues that affect national identity and civic responsibility. Through Behind The Scenes, Akindele has once again shown how cinema can spark meaningful conversations while entertaining audiences across the country.
