The scheme announced the decision on Sunday through a notice shared on its official X handle, citing ongoing renovation work at the state orientation camp as the reason for the postponement.
According to the NYSC, affected prospective corps members (PCMs) will receive further communication regarding alternative arrangements for their orientation exercise.
“This is to notify the General Public and Prospective Corps Members (PCMs) deployed to Niger State for the 2026 Batch B Stream I Orientation Course that their Orientation Course Exercise is suspended for now due to ongoing renovation work at the Orientation Camp.
“PCMs affected should note that they will be contacted at a short notice on where and when to report for their Orientation Course.
“The Management regrets all inconveniences to the affected PCMs and their parents,” the statement read.
The development has created uncertainty for many prospective corps members who were preparing to begin the mandatory three-week orientation programme alongside their counterparts across the country.
While the NYSC did not specify a new date for the exercise, it assured those affected that updates would be communicated as soon as arrangements are finalised.
The suspension comes months after the Niger State orientation camp in Paiko, located in Paikoro Local Government Area, suffered extensive damage from a severe windstorm. The incident reportedly affected critical facilities within the camp, including male hostels, the multipurpose hall, kitchen facilities, and staff quarters, raising concerns about the camp’s readiness to host thousands of corps members.
Following the destruction, Governor Mohammed Bago ordered immediate rehabilitation of the damaged structures to restore the camp to operational standards.
The latest postponement highlights the infrastructural challenges that continue to affect some NYSC facilities across the country. Similar disruptions linked to renovation and rehabilitation projects were recorded earlier this year in Enugu and Osun states, where orientation activities were also adjusted to accommodate repair works.
The 2026 Batch B Stream I Orientation Course officially began nationwide on Wednesday, June 10, and is expected to conclude on Tuesday, June 30. However, prospective corps members assigned to Niger State will now await further directives from the NYSC on when and where they will undertake the programme.
For affected PCMs, the announcement means a temporary delay in the commencement of their national service journey, even as authorities work to ensure that the orientation camp meets the required standards for safety and accommodation.
