Regularly eating foods such as beans, lentils, chickpeas, tofu and other soy-based products may help reduce the risk of developing high blood pressure, according to a new international review of scientific evidence.

The study, published in BMJ Nutrition Prevention & Health, adds to a growing body of research suggesting that plant-based foods can play an important role in supporting cardiovascular health and reducing the burden of chronic diseases.

Researchers examined whether people who consume higher amounts of legumes and soy foods are less likely to develop hypertension, a condition that affects hundreds of millions of people worldwide and is a major risk factor for heart disease, stroke and kidney problems.

After analysing data from multiple long-term studies, the researchers found a consistent link between higher consumption of these foods and a lower risk of high blood pressure.

Significant Reduction in Hypertension Risk

According to the findings, individuals who consumed the highest amounts of legumes were approximately 16 percent less likely to develop hypertension compared with those who consumed the least.

The benefits appeared even stronger for soy-based foods, with people in the highest consumption category showing a 19 percent lower risk of developing high blood pressure.

To arrive at these conclusions, researchers pooled data from 12 prospective studies involving tens of thousands of participants from the United States, Europe and Asia.

The studies tracked participants over extended periods, recording dietary habits and monitoring whether individuals later developed hypertension.

Foods included in the analysis ranged from beans, peas, lentils and chickpeas to tofu, soy milk, edamame and miso.

Across different populations and dietary patterns, higher consumption of both legumes and soy foods was consistently associated with better blood pressure outcomes.

How Much Might Be Beneficial?

The researchers also examined whether there appeared to be an optimal level of consumption linked to the greatest protective effect.

Their analysis suggested that the strongest benefits were observed among individuals consuming approximately 170 grams of legumes per day and between 60 and 80 grams of soy foods daily.

Interestingly, the study found that increasing intake beyond those levels did not appear to produce substantially greater benefits.

For soy foods in particular, the protective effect appeared to plateau, indicating that moderation may be sufficient to achieve most of the observed advantages.

Why These Foods May Support Heart Health

Nutrition experts say legumes and soy foods contain several nutrients and plant compounds that may help regulate blood pressure and improve cardiovascular health.

One major factor is their high fibre content.

Dietary fibre supports digestive health, helps improve cholesterol levels and may contribute to better weight management—factors that are all linked to healthier blood pressure levels.

These foods are also naturally rich in minerals such as potassium and magnesium, both of which play important roles in regulating blood pressure and maintaining healthy blood vessel function.

Researchers further noted that when fibre is fermented by beneficial gut bacteria, it produces substances known as short-chain fatty acids.

These compounds may help blood vessels relax, improve circulation and reduce inflammation, all of which can contribute to lower blood pressure.

Soy foods offer additional potential benefits because they contain naturally occurring plant compounds known as isoflavones.

Some studies suggest that isoflavones may have mild blood pressure-lowering effects by improving blood vessel flexibility and supporting healthy circulation.

A Simple and Affordable Dietary Option

Beans, lentils and chickpeas remain staple foods in many parts of the world, although consumption varies significantly between regions.

Researchers noted that average intake remains relatively low in several countries, particularly in parts of Europe and the United Kingdom, despite growing evidence of their health benefits.

The findings suggest that increasing consumption of these affordable, nutrient-rich foods could represent a practical strategy for improving public health and reducing the prevalence of hypertension.

For many households, legumes offer an inexpensive source of protein, fibre and essential nutrients, making them accessible even in low-resource settings.

Researchers Urge Caution

Despite the encouraging findings, the authors emphasized that the study does not prove a direct cause-and-effect relationship.

Because the analysis was based on observational studies, it cannot conclusively determine whether legumes and soy foods themselves are responsible for the lower risk of hypertension.

People who consume more plant-based foods may also engage in other healthy behaviours—such as exercising regularly, maintaining a healthy weight or avoiding smoking—that could contribute to better cardiovascular outcomes.

The researchers therefore caution that additional clinical studies are needed to better understand the biological mechanisms involved and determine optimal intake levels.

Growing Evidence for Plant-Based Diets

Even with those limitations, health experts say the findings align with a broader scientific consensus supporting diets rich in plant foods.

A growing number of studies have linked increased consumption of legumes, vegetables, fruits, nuts and whole grains to lower rates of heart disease, diabetes and other chronic health conditions.

Experts not involved in the research noted that the results reinforce existing dietary recommendations that encourage greater intake of plant-based foods as part of a balanced eating pattern.

While more research is needed to establish definitive recommendations, the latest findings suggest that adding more beans, lentils, chickpeas and soy products to everyday meals could be a simple step toward supporting healthier blood pressure levels and improving long-term heart health.
