Nigerian Afrobeats sensation Tems is set to take the global stage once again, this time joining an elite lineup of music greats at the official opening of the Barack Obama Presidential Centre in Chicago on June 18.
The highly anticipated ceremony will feature performances from some of the world’s most celebrated artists, including Stevie Wonder and John Legend, as the centre opens its doors on Chicago’s South Side as a major cultural and civic landmark.
Former United States President Barack Obama introduced the star-studded lineup in an Instagram reel delivered in a light-hearted conversational style, unveiling what has quickly become one of the most talked-about entertainment rosters of the year.
A powerhouse lineup of global music stars
Beyond Tems, Stevie Wonder, and John Legend, the event will also feature performances from Bono and The Edge, Bruce Springsteen, Christina Aguilera, Common, Eddie Vedder, Jennifer Hudson, and Latin music icon Marc Anthony. Film producer Marsai Martin and hip-hop collective The Roots are also expected to participate, adding further depth to the celebration’s cultural mix.

“A full-circle moment” for Michelle Obama
Former First Lady Michelle Obama described the inauguration of the centre as a deeply personal milestone for both her family and the South Side Chicago community.
“The opening of the Presidential Centre right here on the South Side of Chicago is truly a full-circle moment,” she said.
Reflecting on her upbringing in the area, she recalled how the site once looked very different.
“So much of my existence as a child into high school was driving past this very location where really nothing was. It was a highway. It was a dangerous place. It was an unutilised park space.”
She added that witnessing its transformation into a major civic institution carries deep emotional significance:
“And I always wondered what was going on there. But to now be a part of this amazing centre. This is beyond a gift.”
Michelle Obama further emphasised the centre’s purpose as a space for inspiration, learning, and opportunity:
“I have said it before that the notion that kids like me will have a magnificent space full of history, and hope, and art, and leadership activity right in their backyard. There is nothing more full circle like that.”

The Barack Obama Presidential Centre is designed as more than a museum or archival space. It will function as a library, educational hub, conference facility, community gathering space, and the headquarters of the Obama Foundation.
Michelle Obama stressed its importance to future generations, noting:
“It means so much to Barack and me to open up the Obama Presidential Centre on the South Side of Chicago. This is where I grew up, where Barack got his start, and where we raised our girls. So having a place where kids from our community can see themselves, connect with each other, and channel their hope—there’s nothing more powerful than that.”
