England boss praises leadership, teamwork and commitment after convincing victory over Croatia

England manager Thomas Tuchel has lavished praise on captain Harry Kane and midfielder Jude Bellingham after the duo inspired the Three Lions to a commanding 4-2 victory over Croatia in their opening match of the FIFA World Cup.

The win in Dallas provided the perfect start to England's campaign, with Kane scoring twice in the first half, Bellingham adding a third shortly after the restart and Marcus Rashford coming off the bench to complete the scoring.

While the goals grabbed the headlines, Tuchel was particularly impressed by Kane's all-round contribution, highlighting a crucial defensive intervention deep into stoppage time as evidence of the striker's leadership and commitment.

Kane's brace saw him draw level with England legend Gary Lineker as the country's joint-highest World Cup goalscorer with 10 goals. However, for Tuchel, the Bayern Munich forward's willingness to sacrifice himself defensively was equally significant.

“If you see the commitment of our captain, of our No 9 in the extra time, to block a crucial shot after a set-piece with all his body and his commitment to buy into a defensive action like this then you know everything about his performance today,” Tuchel said.

“A complete performance. Absolute leader. He's all in. Physically, mentally. It's the full package at the moment. He wants it and he leads by example, so we're very happy.”

The performance further underlined Kane's importance to Tuchel's England side, not only as the team's chief goalscorer but also as a leader setting standards on and off the pitch.

Bellingham also earned special praise from the German coach after delivering another influential display on one of football's biggest stages.

The Real Madrid star had been competing with Aston Villa midfielder Morgan Rogers for the attacking midfield position leading up to the match. Despite the selection dilemma, Tuchel ultimately trusted Bellingham's experience and big-game mentality, a decision that paid off as the 23-year-old found the net and controlled large portions of the game.

Tuchel revealed that beyond his quality on the ball, Bellingham had impressed the coaching staff with his commitment to the team's collective approach during preparations.

“You can rely on Jude in these moments. He loves these pressure games. That brings out the best in him,” Tuchel said.

“It's an easy decision to let him play and trust him, also because of the last 17 days how he bought into the idea of team spirit, the idea of brotherhood and the idea of how we want to play football which is a slightly different position to his position in Real Madrid.”

The England boss also acknowledged the difficult decision to leave Rogers out of the starting lineup despite the midfielder's impressive form.

“The tough decision was to say to Morgan Rogers he will not start because he deserves 100 per cent to start and he did ever so well for us and me.

“Jude was very reliable and did his very best to be a top team player for us.

“We do this as a team. The team and every player is ready to do it as a team. We can just do it together as a group if we want to push it all the way and today was a very good first step.”

The victory offered encouraging signs for England's ambitions of making a deep run in the tournament, with several key players delivering strong performances under pressure.

Tuchel also reserved praise for Marcus Rashford, whose late goal capped an impressive substitute appearance and ended a prolonged scoring drought for the national team.

The Manchester United forward, who rediscovered form during a loan spell at Barcelona in the second half of last season, had scored only once in his previous 15 appearances for England before finding the net against Croatia.

“Harry is in excellent shape. Jude is in excellent shape. Marcus is pushing and pushing and pushing and training on the highest level,” Tuchel said.

“I'm very happy for [Rashford] that he got this relief and I hope he stays hungry for the next one and the next one because he was absolutely impressive through the last 17 days and really deserved his goal.”

The England manager revealed that he had personally spoken with Rashford before the match, commending the forward's attitude and commitment throughout the training camp.

“We had a talk yesterday, where I told him I was very impressed with how he was in camp, how he pushes on the field.

“He's totally invested in every meeting, he's very fast in translating a meeting onto the pitch what we want tactically, he pushes on a respectful level with Anthony Gordon on the position.

“At the moment he's in a very good place.

“I was so happy he was the one to unlock this long spell where he was not decisive for us from within the game and hopefully he can keep this up.”

With England securing three points and several of their biggest stars delivering when it mattered most, Tuchel will be encouraged by the balance, discipline and attacking quality shown by his side as they look ahead to the challenges that await in the remainder of the tournament.

For now, the German coach believes his players have taken an important first step, led by a captain setting the standard, a midfielder thriving under pressure and a forward eager to rediscover his best form.
