The initiative, held under the global theme, “Inspired by Nature. For Climate. For Our Future,” brought together employees, environmental agencies, and community stakeholders in a coordinated effort aimed at promoting cleaner surroundings, healthier ecosystems, and greater environmental awareness.
The two-phase programme underscored the Bank’s growing focus on sustainable business practices and its determination to contribute meaningfully to environmental preservation while supporting broader climate-resilience objectives.
The first phase of the exercise took place on Wednesday, June 3, 2026, when members of staff embarked on a community clean-up campaign along Ajose Adeogun Street in Victoria Island, Lagos. The exercise saw employees actively engaged in clearing waste from public spaces while also sensitising residents and business operators on responsible waste disposal practices.
Beyond the physical clean-up, the activity reinforced Zenith Bank’s culture of volunteerism, environmental stewardship, and community engagement, highlighting the role individuals and organisations can play in maintaining a cleaner and healthier environment.
The second phase followed on Thursday, June 4, 2026, with a waterways clean-up operation at the Falomo Waterways in Ikoyi. The exercise was carried out in collaboration with the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) and the Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA).
The joint operation focused on removing marine debris and other pollutants from the waterways, an effort aimed at protecting aquatic ecosystems, improving water quality, and supporting Lagos State’s ongoing environmental sustainability and climate adaptation agenda.
Speaking on the significance of the initiative, the Group Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Zenith Bank Plc, Dame Dr. Adaora Umeoji, OON, reiterated the Bank’s commitment to embedding sustainability into every aspect of its operations.
“At Zenith Bank, sustainability is integral to how we operate. Clearing our streets and our waterways is a practical reminder that protecting the environment is a shared responsibility, and one we are proud to take up alongside LAWMA and LASWA. Through these exercises, we are taking deliberate action to preserve our communities, support climate action, and inspire others to act. Our operations will continue to align with global environmental standards as we build a more sustainable future for Nigeria and Africa,” she said.
The clean-up initiative forms part of Zenith Bank’s broader Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) strategy, which prioritises responsible corporate citizenship, environmental protection, and long-term sustainable development.
Over the years, the Bank has continued to invest in green initiatives, energy-efficiency programmes, and community-focused interventions designed to reduce environmental impact while creating positive social outcomes.
The World Environment Day activities also align with several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy), SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), and SDG 13 (Climate Action).
Industry observers note that financial institutions are increasingly expected to play a leading role in addressing environmental challenges through sustainable financing, responsible operations, and stakeholder engagement. Zenith Bank’s participation in this year’s World Environment Day reflects that growing commitment within the banking sector.
As climate concerns continue to gain prominence globally, the Bank affirmed that sustainability will remain a key operational priority across its Nigerian operations and throughout its expanding presence in Africa, the United Kingdom, and Europe.
Through initiatives such as the Lagos clean-up campaign, Zenith Bank continues to demonstrate how corporate organisations can contribute to environmental protection while encouraging collective action toward a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable future.
