Firm uses annual art platform to promote emerging talents, intellectual property awareness
Commercial law firm Babalakin & Co. has strengthened its commitment to Nigeria’s creative sector with the award of ₦9 million to outstanding young artists who distinguished themselves at the second edition of its annual Art Competition and Exhibition.
The initiative, which ended with a grand finale in Lagos, brought together some of the country’s promising young creatives, with four winners emerging from 26 finalists selected from over 100 entries submitted by artists across Nigeria.
Themed “Japa to Japada,” the competition invited participants to reflect on issues surrounding migration, returning home, and the responsibility of young Nigerians in shaping the country’s future through creativity, innovation, and enterprise.
Speaking during the event, the firm’s Managing Partner, Olawale Akoni (SAN), said the competition was created to build a bridge between the legal profession and the creative community while giving young artists a platform to showcase their abilities.
According to him, the initiative was not only about recognising artistic excellence but also about equipping participants with knowledge that could help them build sustainable careers.
“The programme goes beyond rewarding creativity by exposing participants to legal issues such as intellectual property protection, contractual obligations and other safeguards needed to build successful careers in the arts.”
Akoni explained that the idea behind the competition was influenced by discussions around decorating the firm’s newly established office. Rather than relying solely on established artists, the firm decided to create a pathway for emerging talents to gain visibility and have their works recognised.
He noted that the project reflects a broader commitment to supporting Nigeria’s creative economy, which continues to play an increasingly important role in economic development, employment creation, and global cultural representation.
Babalakin urges Nigerians abroad to contribute to national growth
The firm’s Senior Partner, Dr. Bolanle Olawale Babalakin (SAN), said the theme of this year’s competition was carefully chosen to encourage deeper conversations about migration and national development.
He explained that “Japa to Japada” was designed to challenge the perception that opportunities exist only outside Nigeria, urging young Nigerians and professionals abroad to remain connected to the country’s growth.
According to him, Nigerians should continue to explore ways of contributing their skills, experiences, and resources toward building a stronger nation.
Babalakin expressed optimism that the competition would grow into one of Nigeria’s most respected platforms for discovering and promoting artistic talents.
Four artists emerge winners
At the end of the competition, Segun Owolabi emerged the overall winner, taking home the grand prize of ₦5 million.
Faith Michael won the second prize of ₦2 million, while Ridwanullah Zakariyau secured the third position with a ₦1 million prize.
Another artist, Joseph Oluebubechukwu, received ₦1 million after winning the People’s Choice Award, bringing the total value of prizes presented to ₦9 million.
The organisers praised the judges, partners, and members of staff whose efforts contributed to the success of the competition. They reaffirmed their determination to sustain the annual event as a platform for discovering, supporting, and promoting young Nigerian artists.
The initiative, they said, represents an example of how professional sectors such as law can contribute meaningfully to the growth of Nigeria’s cultural and creative industries while empowering the next generation of innovators.
