The airline’s figures revealed that 11,530 Nigerian passengers travelled to China last year, making the Asian country the leading destination among Nigerians on international routes.
Guangzhou accounted for nearly 80 per cent of Nigeria-China travel, maintaining its position as a major commercial centre for Nigerian entrepreneurs, importers and business travellers. The city’s popularity reflects the strong trade relationship between Nigeria and China, particularly in areas linked to commerce and manufacturing.
Other Chinese cities, including Beijing, Shanghai and Shenzhen, also recorded significant numbers of Nigerian visitors, highlighting the expanding economic and business connections between both countries.
Beyond China, the United States remained one of the preferred long-haul destinations for Nigerian travellers, with about 2,500 passengers flying through Emirates’ network to its 11 gateways across the country.
New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport emerged as the busiest American destination, accounting for nearly one-third of Nigeria-US travellers. Other popular destinations included Houston, Los Angeles, Washington, D.C., Chicago and Boston, reflecting a combination of business trips, education, family visits and tourism.
The United Kingdom also maintained strong appeal among Nigerian travellers, recording more than 5,850 passengers during the summer travel period.
London Heathrow remained the busiest UK destination, receiving more than 2,500 Nigerian passengers, representing over 43 per cent of all UK-bound travellers. Manchester also attracted significant traffic, driven by business activities and the large Nigerian community in Britain.
According to Emirates, more than 44,000 passengers travelled from Nigeria on its flights between May 1 and August 31, 2025, demonstrating the increasing demand for international travel and Nigeria’s growing connection to global destinations.
Dubai continued to rank among the airline’s most popular destinations for Nigerian travellers, attracting more than 6,370 passengers during the period.
The airline said Dubai’s appeal remained strong among Nigerians travelling for shopping, leisure, family holidays and business, while its location also made it a major transit point for passengers connecting to destinations across the Emirates network.
Other destinations that recorded notable interest included Delhi, Mumbai, Medina, Sydney, Christchurch, Mauritius, Seychelles and several European cities.
Emirates said the travel trends reflected a wide range of motivations among Nigerian passengers, including business, education, tourism, religious pilgrimage and family reunification.
Solo Travel Gains Popularity Among Nigerians
One of the key trends highlighted by Emirates was the increasing popularity of independent travel among Nigerians.
The airline disclosed that more than 61 per cent of Nigerian passengers travelling during the 2025 summer period travelled alone, making solo travellers the largest passenger category.
Families accounted for 17 per cent of travellers, while couples represented 12 per cent, suggesting changing travel habits and growing confidence among Nigerians exploring international destinations independently.
“Beyond an extensive global network, Emirates continues to enhance the travel experience with regionally inspired cuisine, award-winning hospitality and more than 6,500 channels of entertainment on its acclaimed ice inflight entertainment system,” Emirates stated.
The airline added that passengers connecting through Dubai can access its Premium Economy cabins on selected Airbus A380, Airbus A350 and Boeing 777 aircraft serving destinations such as China, the United States and the United Kingdom.
Emirates said its Premium Economy service offers wider seating, increased comfort, enhanced dining options and a quieter travel experience.
For passengers seeking a luxury experience, the airline also highlighted its First Class Private Suites available on selected A380 aircraft, featuring private cabins, gourmet dining, an onboard lounge and the carrier’s signature Shower Spa.
As international travel continues to expand, Emirates said the latest passenger trends underline Nigeria’s growing importance within its African network, with travellers increasingly moving across global destinations for business, education, family connections, faith and leisure.
