The burial reception of the late father of Davido’s longtime aide, Israel Afeare, popularly known as Israel DMW, turned into an emotional yet memorable celebration on Sunday as Afrobeats superstar David Adeleke, widely known as Davido, made a surprise appearance and performance in Benin City, Edo State.
The award-winning singer, who attended the event to honour the memory of Israel DMW’s late father and stand by his trusted associate during the difficult period, thrilled mourners and guests with a live performance of several of his hit songs. His unexpected appearance transformed the reception into a lively celebration as guests sang along, danced and cheered throughout his set.
The excitement reached a peak when enthusiastic fans surged towards the stage in an attempt to get closer to the music star, prompting security personnel to step in and maintain order while the performance continued.
Beyond the entertainment, the event reflected the strong bond between Davido and Israel DMW. Members of the singer's renowned 30BG crew were also present to support the bereaved family, with many making cash donations and offering words of encouragement.
Family members, friends, associates and well-wishers travelled from different parts of Nigeria and beyond to pay their final respects to the late patriarch, turning the occasion into a massive gathering filled with tributes, prayers and solidarity.
Addressing guests after his performance, Davido expressed appreciation to everyone who attended the ceremony and reiterated that his presence was simply to support someone who has remained loyal to him over the years.
“It is good to be here to support Israel. I thank everyone who came out and showed us love at this time. Thank you all once again,” Davido said.
An emotional Israel DMW, visibly overwhelmed by the outpouring of love and support, thanked Davido for personally attending the burial reception and entertaining guests despite his busy schedule.
Describing the Afrobeats star as an exceptional employer and mentor, Israel praised Davido for consistently standing by him in both good and difficult times.
“I must thank my boss for showing up for me. The 30BG crew also deserves commendation. The support from my family, friends, associates and well-wishers will remain etched in my memory,” Israel DMW said.
He also appreciated members of the 30BG family, relatives, friends and everyone who contributed to ensuring the burial ceremony was successful, noting that their kindness and presence would never be forgotten.
The burial reception attracted several high-profile personalities from different sectors, including the Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, Blessing Agbebaku, who represented Governor Monday Okpebholo.
Also in attendance were politicians, entertainers, business leaders, community leaders, family members, friends and numerous well-wishers, all of whom joined the Afeare family to celebrate the life and legacy of the deceased.
Guests were treated to an array of food and drinks throughout the reception, while residents who gathered outside the venue were equally served refreshments as large crowds continued to celebrate alongside the family, bringing the ceremony to a memorable close.
