Ericsson has announced a major leadership change with the appointment of Christophe Van de Weyer as Head of Business Area Global Communications Platform and Chief Executive Officer of Vonage, as the telecommunications giant continues efforts to strengthen its enterprise communications business and accelerate growth.
The appointment also sees Van de Weyer join Ericsson's Executive Team, succeeding Niklas Heuveldop, who will step down from the role on August 15, 2026. Ericsson said Heuveldop will remain available until December 31, 2026, to ensure a smooth and orderly leadership transition.
Van de Weyer, who joined Vonage in 2025 as Head of Business Unit API, has been credited with driving the company's renewed growth by expanding its Communications Platform as a Service (CPaaS) and Network APIs business. His work has focused on helping enterprises leverage programmable networks and advanced communications technologies to accelerate digital transformation.
Before joining Vonage, Van de Weyer served as Chief Executive Officer of Telesign, a United States-based subsidiary of Proximus Group. He also held several senior leadership roles within Proximus and spent nearly two decades at global management consulting firm Bain & Company, where he became a partner and advised some of the world's largest telecommunications companies through the firm's Telecommunications and Technology practice.
Announcing the appointment, Ericsson President and Chief Executive Officer, Börje Ekholm, expressed confidence that Van de Weyer would build on the company's ongoing transformation efforts.
“Christophe brings a deep understanding of the market for communication services and he has done a great job getting the Business Unit API at Vonage back to growth. I’m happy to welcome him to the Executive Team and to accelerate the turnaround efforts. This is another good example of a well prepared and orderly succession for critical members of the leadership team.”
Responding to his appointment, Van de Weyer said he was honoured to lead the next phase of growth for Vonage and Ericsson's global communications platform business.
“I’m truly excited and deeply grateful for this opportunity. Ericsson and Vonage are at the forefront of network-powered solutions combining AI, data, and API to transform enterprise workflows and deliver superior customer engagement. I’m looking forward to continuing our work and further accelerating our growth momentum alongside the exceptionally talented teams at Vonage and Ericsson.”
Ericsson also announced that Niklas Heuveldop will step down after more than three decades with the company. Having first joined Ericsson in 1993, Heuveldop has served on the Executive Team since 2016 and held several senior leadership positions, including Head of Market Area North America, Chief Strategy Officer, Head of Technology and Emerging Business, and Chief Customer Officer. He assumed leadership of Business Area Global Communications Platform and the role of Vonage CEO on February 1, 2024.
Paying tribute to Heuveldop's contributions, Ekholm highlighted his role in strengthening Ericsson's position in key markets and restoring growth at Vonage.
“Niklas has contributed immensely to Ericsson’s turnaround journey with his deep knowledge of our industry, outstanding customer focus, business acumen and visionary leadership. During his tenure, Vonage has been restructured and the business refocused, significantly strengthening its performance and restoring growth. Before that Niklas led our significant market share expansion in North America, including the USD 14 billion network transformation deal with AT&T. I’d like to extend my gratitude to Niklas for all his contributions to Ericsson and I wish him all the best in his future endeavors.”
Reflecting on his career, Heuveldop described his time at Ericsson as a defining chapter marked by global assignments, business transformations and sustained innovation.
“It has been a life changing experience to work at Ericsson for two periods, spanning over three decades, including six overseas assignments, experiencing periods of rapid growth, and multiple turnarounds across all business lines, globally. Ericsson is a fascinating global powerhouse leader and it has been a true privilege to work alongside the most amazing talent in one of the most complex and competitive industries in the world. Vonage’s turn-around continues to gain momentum, growth has been restored, investments peaked and strategy execution is solid. We have an exceptional team ready to continue building on our momentum, and in Christophe we have an incredibly talented and highly appreciated leader that I’m proud to hand over the reins to. Time has come for me to move on and pursue my next challenge.”
The leadership transition comes as Ericsson continues to strengthen its focus on enterprise communications, network APIs and AI-powered digital solutions, positioning Vonage as a key driver of its strategy to help businesses modernise customer engagement and digital workflows through advanced communications technologies.
