The Federal Government has unveiled the Credit for Laptops, Internet, Connectivity and Knowledge Digital Devices (C.L.I.C.K.D.) Programme, a new initiative aimed at expanding access to laptops, internet-enabled devices and other essential digital tools through affordable consumer credit.

The programme, launched on Tuesday in Abuja, is being implemented by the Nigerian Consumer Credit Corporation (CREDICORP) in partnership with the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy as part of efforts to promote digital inclusion and strengthen Nigeria's digital economy.

Developed in collaboration with the Federal Government's Three Million Technical Talent (3MTT) Programme, the initiative is expected to provide eligible Nigerians with structured financing to acquire laptops and other digital devices needed for learning, work and innovation.

The scheme will begin with locally assembled laptops, a move the government says is intended to support indigenous manufacturing, create jobs and stimulate the country's technology ecosystem while expanding access to digital tools.

FG Says Credit Access Will Drive Economic Growth

Speaking at the launch, the Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, stressed the importance of a functional consumer credit system in accelerating economic development and empowering citizens.

He praised President Bola Tinubu and the management of CREDICORP for driving the initiative, describing it as a major step toward expanding economic opportunities, boosting productivity and creating jobs across the country.

According to Tijani, the administration's commitment to building a sustainable credit ecosystem is laying the groundwork for entrepreneurship, digital transformation and long-term economic growth.

He noted that access to affordable credit enables individuals and businesses to acquire productive assets, improve their livelihoods and contribute meaningfully to national development.

The minister said initiatives such as C.L.I.C.K.D. demonstrate the government's commitment to leveraging technology and innovative financing to bridge the country's digital divide.

"That's what President Bola Tinubu is doing. When he said he wants to create a `$1 trillion economy, and there's no other way to create that economy but what we're here to launch today."

A key highlight of the event was the symbolic presentation of laptop devices to some of the programme's first beneficiaries by the minister.

CREDICORP to Distribute 1,000 Locally Assembled Laptops

Earlier, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of CREDICORP, Uzoma Nwagba, announced that the corporation would provide 1,000 locally assembled laptops to eligible fellows participating in the programme across Nigeria.

According to him, the initiative is designed to equip young Nigerians with the digital tools needed to acquire in-demand technology skills, improve learning outcomes and participate more effectively in the digital economy.

Nwagba explained that prioritising locally assembled laptops aligns with the Federal Government's broader strategy of supporting local manufacturing while creating employment opportunities within Nigeria's technology sector.

"The rollout began in Abuja, where 77 beneficiaries received their devices, while the remaining laptops would be distributed to qualified fellows in other states in phases."

He added that beyond improving access to technology, the programme is expected to bridge the digital divide by enabling more young Nigerians to access digital training, remote work opportunities and other technology-driven economic activities.

According to Nwagba, the C.L.I.C.K.D. initiative forms part of CREDICORP's wider efforts to make digital devices more affordable through responsible consumer credit, ensuring that more Nigerians are equipped with the tools needed to thrive in an increasingly digital world.

With the launch of the programme, the Federal Government hopes to accelerate digital inclusion, strengthen workforce development and empower more citizens to participate actively in Nigeria's growing technology-driven economy.
