General Motors has appointed longtime automotive marketing executive Allyson Witherspoon as the new chief marketing officer for its Buick and GMC brands, marking a major leadership addition as the company continues to reshape its global marketing strategy.

Witherspoon joins GM after more than a decade at Nissan, where she served as chief marketing officer and played a key role in developing the automaker’s brand strategy, customer engagement initiatives and product marketing efforts.

Her appointment comes as Lin-Hua Wu, GM’s executive vice president and chief communications and marketing officer, continues to build out her leadership team after assuming broader responsibility for marketing operations in November.

Witherspoon Takes Charge of Two Iconic GM Brands

In her new role, Witherspoon will oversee marketing strategy for Buick and GMC, two of GM’s most recognized brands, as they navigate a period of transformation driven by changing consumer expectations, new vehicle technologies and the growth of premium mobility offerings.

Announcing her move on LinkedIn, Witherspoon expressed excitement about joining the company and working with GM’s leadership team and dealer network.

“I’m thrilled to share that I will be joining General Motors as Chief Marketing Officer for Buick and GMC,” Witherspoon wrote.

She added that the opportunity represented a chance to help shape the future of two established American automotive brands.

“It’s an incredible honor to partner with a strategic and talented leadership team and dealer network to steer both brands into the next era,” she said.

Witherspoon said she looks forward to strengthening customer experiences, advancing technology-driven offerings and promoting vehicles that combine confidence, adventure and premium capability.

“I look forward to helping write the next chapter for two iconic American brands in Buick and GMC. Elevating the experiences, technologies and vehicles that inspire confidence, enable adventure and deliver premium capability in everything we do. Let’s goooooo!” she added.

Long Nissan Career Comes to an End

Witherspoon spent approximately 12.5 years at Nissan, rising to the position of chief marketing officer and becoming one of the company’s most prominent marketing leaders.

During her tenure, she worked across brand development, advertising, customer engagement and communications initiatives at a time when the automotive industry was undergoing significant changes, including the shift toward electrification and digital customer experiences.

Strategic Timing for GM Brands

The appointment comes at a critical moment for Buick and GMC as both brands seek to expand their market presence and strengthen their positioning among increasingly competitive automotive segments.

GMC has continued to build its reputation around premium trucks and SUVs, while Buick has been undergoing a modernization effort aimed at attracting new customers through updated designs, technology and a more elevated brand identity.

Witherspoon’s experience in automotive marketing and brand transformation is expected to support GM’s efforts to deepen customer connections and drive future growth for both marques.
