The airline originally placed options for the Boeing 737-10s when it ordered its first two aircraft of the type during the Farnborough Airshow two years ago. Boeing confirmed at this year’s event that Luxair has now exercised those options, turning them into confirmed purchases while adding two more options for future fleet growth.
Luxair Chief Executive Officer Gilles Feith said the new aircraft would support the airline’s operational goals while helping reduce its environmental impact.
“With 20 percent lower fuel use and emissions compared with the aircraft they replace, these aircraft also support our ambition to further reduce our environmental footprint while strengthening Luxembourg’s connectivity,” Feith said.
He added that the additional purchase rights would provide the airline with greater flexibility as market conditions evolve.
“At the same time, the additional purchase rights preserve valuable strategic flexibility, allowing us to adapt our fleet in line with future market developments and customer demand,” he said.
The latest agreement strengthens Luxair’s long-term fleet modernization plans. The airline currently operates Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft, and once all its Boeing narrowbody orders are delivered, its fleet is expected to include eight 737-8s and four 737-10s.
Boeing is targeting certification of the 737 MAX 10 by the end of the year. The programme recently received a boost after the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) restored Boeing’s authority to issue airworthiness certificates for certain 737 MAX and 787 aircraft.
Beyond its Boeing fleet expansion, Luxair also continues to diversify its aircraft portfolio. The airline received its first Embraer 195-E2 regional jet late last year, adding another modern aircraft type to its operations.
The new commitments underline Luxair’s efforts to strengthen its network, improve efficiency and prepare its fleet for future passenger demand.
