Former Spain midfielder says World Cup outcome could decide football’s biggest individual honour.

Former Spain international Gaizka Mendieta has identified Lionel Messi and Lamine Yamal as the two strongest contenders for this season’s Ballon d’Or, with the outcome of the 2026 FIFA World Cup expected to play a decisive role in determining the winner.

The ex-midfielder believes Argentina captain Messi could further cement his legacy by claiming a record-extending ninth Ballon d’Or if Argentina defeats Spain in the tournament final.

However, Mendieta also pointed to Barcelona and Spain youngster Lamine Yamal as a serious candidate for the prestigious award, particularly if the Spanish national team succeeds in lifting the World Cup trophy for the second time in its history.

According to the former Valencia star, success on the global stage often becomes the defining factor in Ballon d’Or voting, with players who deliver at major international tournaments gaining a significant advantage.

Speaking to Goal, Mendieta said:

“The World Cup serves as the pivotal factor for the Ballon d’Or. Just as Harry Kane may have earned it, Lamine Yamal could also achieve this. He has had an outstanding season despite facing injuries and has been crucial for Barcelona.”

He added that Yamal’s continued importance to Spain’s campaign makes him one of the players to watch when the award is decided.

“He continues to be essential for Spain. If Spain triumphs, we should consider their roster for potential candidates. Mikel Oyarzabal is another exceptional player that has gained recognition. If Argentina prevails, Messi will undoubtedly win it.”

Messi has been among Argentina’s standout performers during the tournament, contributing eight goals and four assists in the competition currently being hosted in North America.

Yamal, despite being younger and having a different role within Spain’s squad, has also attracted significant attention for his performances. The teenager has scored one goal in seven matches but remains regarded as one of the most influential young talents in world football.

The Ballon d’Or race has traditionally been shaped by individual statistics, club success and performances at major international competitions. With the World Cup reaching its decisive stages, Mendieta believes the final result could determine whether experience or emerging talent claims football’s most coveted individual prize.
