The Argentine leader said he has no intention of changing the routine he has maintained since the start of the competition, insisting that he will continue watching the final against Spain from home rather than attending the showpiece event in New Jersey.
Speaking to El Observador radio on Thursday, Milei said there was no possibility of abandoning what he described as his winning tradition.
“Under no circumstances” would he break his so-called good luck ritual of watching World Cup matches from the presidential residency.
Milei also disclosed another superstition he has followed during Argentina’s World Cup campaign — wearing a thick jacket from state-controlled oil company YPF during every match.
According to the president, the ritual began during Argentina’s quarter-final clash against Switzerland, where the jacket appeared to become an unlikely symbol of luck.
“Since it was cold and I don’t turn on the heating, I use a jacket from the oil company which, on the day of the match against Switzerland, kept me really warm,” Milei said.
He explained that he briefly removed the jacket during the game, only for Argentina to concede shortly afterwards, prompting him to put it back on immediately.
“When I took it off, we conceded a goal, so I put it back on and haven’t taken it off since,” he added.
Argentina booked its place in Sunday’s World Cup final after defeating England 2-1 in a hard-fought semi-final on Wednesday. The South American champions will now face Spain in what promises to be one of the biggest sporting events of the year.
While Milei will be following the action from Buenos Aires, several world leaders are expected to be present at the final in New Jersey, including Spain’s King Felipe VI and United States President Donald Trump.
The World Cup final is expected to attract millions of viewers across the globe as Argentina seeks to add another world title to its football history, while Spain aims to reclaim football’s biggest prize.
