Nigerian-American entrepreneur Yinka Ogunbiyi has secured $7 million in seed funding to accelerate the commercial launch of HaloBraid, an innovative braid-assist mechanical technology designed to transform professional hair braiding while supporting, rather than replacing, hairstylists.
The funding marks a significant milestone for the beauty technology startup, positioning HaloBraid for market rollout after attracting strong investor confidence in its approach to modernising protective hairstyling through intelligent automation.
Leading the investment round was Seven Seven Six, the venture capital firm founded by Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian. The round also received backing from AlleyCorp and Bling Capital, underscoring growing interest in technology-driven solutions for the global beauty and personal care industry.
As HaloBraid prepares for commercial deployment, the company already has a substantial market pipeline, with more than 7,000 professional hair salons reportedly joining its active pre-order waiting list.
Ogunbiyi's journey into beauty technology is rooted in both engineering expertise and business leadership. She holds a joint Master of Science and Master of Business Administration degree from Harvard Engineering School and Harvard Business School and previously worked on connected smart home appliances and consumer electronics before venturing into the beauty-tech sector.
The inspiration behind HaloBraid came during the COVID-19 pandemic after Ogunbiyi spent four demanding days installing her own knotless braids. The experience exposed what she viewed as a significant technology gap in an industry serving millions of consumers worldwide.
Determined to address the challenge, she partnered with co-founder David Afolabi to develop a solution that would improve efficiency without taking away the craftsmanship and cultural significance of professional braiding.
Unlike fully automated systems intended to replace human labour, HaloBraid was designed as a collaborative tool that assists professional braiders by handling the physically demanding and repetitive middle section of the braiding process.
The robotic system focuses on repetitive down-shaft weaving movements, which account for nearly 80 percent of a typical braiding session, allowing stylists to complete appointments in significantly less time while reducing physical strain.
Responding to concerns that automation could diminish the cultural value of traditional hairstyling, Ogunbiyi insisted that the technology complements rather than replaces the human experience.
"I don't think anything will get lost from the experience. If anything, it enriches it. Technology simply assists with the repetitive movements that consume the most time and place the greatest strain on the body."
Under the company's operating model, professional hairstylists remain central to every appointment. Stylists begin by manually parting the client's hair, sectioning it and creating the initial anchor braid to ensure proper tension and comfort.
Once the foundation is complete, the HaloBraid device is attached to perform the repetitive mid-shaft braiding sequence before the stylist removes the unit to complete the finishing touches, including trimming and sealing the braid ends according to the client's preferences.
Beyond reducing appointment times and increasing the number of clients salons can serve each day, the technology is also expected to address longstanding occupational health concerns within the hairstyling profession.
Years of repetitive hand movements and sustained physical tension have left many professional braiders dealing with chronic arthritis, carpal tunnel syndrome and persistent back pain. By taking over the most physically demanding stage of the process, HaloBraid aims to reduce workplace injuries while extending the careers of skilled hairstylists.
Industry data further highlights the commercial opportunity behind the innovation. Surveys indicate that nearly 95 percent of Black women would choose protective hairstyles more frequently if salon appointments required less time and physical commitment.
With fresh funding, strong investor backing and growing interest from thousands of salons, HaloBraid is positioning itself at the intersection of beauty, robotics and artificial intelligence. The company believes its technology has the potential to reshape the professional braiding industry by improving efficiency, supporting hairstylists and expanding access to protective hairstyling without compromising the artistry or cultural traditions that define the practice.
