Nigeria’s telecommunications sector recorded further growth in April as the number of active mobile subscriptions climbed to 188.01 million, with Globacom accounting for 23.18 million of the active connections.

The latest industry statistics released by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) on Thursday showed that mobile access continued to expand after the completion of subscriber data verification exercises across telecommunications networks.

The figures also revealed that Nigeria’s teledensity increased to 86.73 per cent, while broadband subscriptions rose to 120.68 million, reflecting the rising demand for voice communication, internet access and digital services across the country.

The growth in active subscriptions places telecom operators under increasing pressure to improve network performance, expand broadband capacity and deliver more customer-focused services as digital adoption continues to accelerate.

For Globacom, the 23.18 million active subscriber base provides a platform for further expansion in data services, youth-focused products, enterprise connectivity and customer retention initiatives as the company approaches its 23rd anniversary in August.

The operator has continued to pursue a mass-market strategy through affordable offerings designed to attract and retain customers. Among its products is the Talkmasta tariff plan, alongside enhanced welcome bonuses aimed at supporting both new and existing subscribers.

Industry observers said the telecommunications market is gradually moving beyond subscriber acquisition, with operators now competing more on active usage, network reliability, customer experience and broadband penetration.

They noted that the implementation of the National Identification Number (NIN)-SIM linkage policy, coupled with the removal of inactive lines, has changed the way industry performance is measured, making verified active subscribers a more reliable indicator of market strength.

According to analysts, Globacom’s 23.18 million active connections provide the company with a strong foundation to deepen customer engagement, improve service delivery and expand its role in Nigeria’s fast-growing broadband ecosystem.

The analysts added that sustained investment in infrastructure, affordable data packages and improved digital services would remain critical factors shaping competition among telecom operators in the coming years.
