OneHealth by AXA has expanded its specialist healthcare offerings with the launch of dedicated Geriatric and Optometry clinics at its Victoria Island Medical Centre in Lagos, a move that reflects growing private sector investment in specialised medical services as demand for quality healthcare rises across Nigeria.

The expansion comes at a time when healthcare providers are responding to shifting demographic and disease patterns, including an increasing prevalence of chronic illnesses, age-related health conditions and vision disorders. Industry experts have consistently called for greater investment in specialist healthcare to complement public health services and improve access to quality medical care.

With the introduction of the new clinics, OneHealth by AXA aims to strengthen integrated healthcare delivery by providing more specialised services under one roof while addressing critical gaps in preventive and long-term care.

Speaking on the development, Chief Business Officer of OneHealth by AXA, Wahen Egbe, said the decision was driven by the changing healthcare needs of Nigerians and the growing demand for specialist medical services.

“The addition of these clinics reflects the growing demand for specialised medical services that address the evolving health needs of people at different stages of life,” she said.

Egbe explained that the newly established Geriatric Clinic is designed to meet the healthcare needs of older adults as Nigeria experiences a steady rise in chronic and age-related illnesses. According to her, the clinic provides comprehensive assessment, prevention, diagnosis and long-term management of conditions commonly associated with ageing.

These include hypertension, diabetes, arthritis, osteoporosis, cognitive decline, mobility disorders and other chronic illnesses that require coordinated multidisciplinary care.

She added that beyond managing medical conditions, the clinic seeks to promote healthy ageing by helping elderly patients maintain functional independence and improve their overall quality of life through personalised treatment plans and continuous specialist support.

The Geriatric Clinic operates every Tuesday between 2:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m., offering specialist consultations for senior citizens and their families.

Also speaking, Country Manager of OneHealth by AXA, Dr. Jadesola Idowu, said the Optometry Clinic was established to improve access to preventive eye care and encourage early diagnosis of vision-related conditions before they result in permanent impairment.

She observed that many eye diseases progress gradually without obvious symptoms until significant vision loss has occurred, making routine eye examinations an essential component of preventive healthcare.

“Our Optometry Clinic offers comprehensive eye examinations, vision screening, refraction services, prescription of corrective lenses, eye health assessments and early detection of common eye diseases affecting children, adults and older persons,” she said.

Idowu added that the clinic also provides preventive eye care counselling, occupational vision assessments, prescription updates and referrals for advanced ophthalmic treatment where necessary.

The Optometry Clinic is open from Monday to Friday between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., providing accessible eye care services for patients across different age groups.

The latest expansion aligns with OneHealth by AXA's broader strategy of strengthening integrated healthcare delivery through a comprehensive range of specialist services within a single medical facility. The healthcare provider, a subsidiary of the AXA Group, currently offers specialist care in cardiology, endocrinology, obstetrics and gynaecology, paediatrics, orthopaedics, physiotherapy, ear, nose and throat (ENT), urology and endoscopy, alongside 24-hour ambulance and radiology services to support emergency care and continuity of treatment.

Healthcare analysts have maintained that sustained investment by private healthcare providers, coupled with stronger collaboration between the public and private sectors, will play a crucial role in improving access to specialist medical services, easing pressure on public hospitals and enhancing healthcare outcomes as demand for quality care continues to grow nationwide.
