Neill died on Monday at the age of 78. In a statement shared with Variety, Spielberg said he was deeply saddened by the loss and credited several filmmakers whose earlier collaborations with Neill helped bring the actor to his attention.
“I owe a debt of gratitude to Roger Donaldson, Gillian Armstrong, Graham Baker and Phillip Noyce for casting Sam Neill in the roles in which he was so brilliant that brought him to my attention and led to his playing Dr. Alan Grant in ‘Jurassic Park,’” Spielberg said.
The director was referring to Neill’s acclaimed performances in films including Sleeping Dogs (1977), My Brilliant Career (1979), The Final Conflict (1981) and Dead Calm (1989), roles that established him as one of the most respected actors of his generation.
Spielberg described Neill as an actor who brought exceptional dedication and teamwork to his performances.
“Sam was exceptionally collaborative,” Spielberg said.
Reflecting on Neill’s role as paleontologist Dr. Alan Grant in Jurassic Park, Spielberg noted that the character required the actor to portray a personality very different from who Neill was in real life.
“It was a stretch for him to play a character who acted as though children were messy and smelly because this was the opposite of the loving father he was to his children,” Spielberg added.
The filmmaker concluded his tribute by highlighting the lasting bond created among the original Jurassic Park cast.
“I adored making all the ‘Jurassic’ movies with him. Along with Laura Dern and Jeff Goldblum, we will always have our ‘Jurassic’ family and Sam will never be forgotten by us or his many millions of fans around the world,” Spielberg said.

A Career Defined by Range and Longevity
Neill became internationally recognised for playing Dr. Alan Grant in Steven Spielberg’s 1993 blockbuster Jurassic Park, a film that became one of the most influential movies in modern cinema.
He later returned to the role in Jurassic Park III (2001) and Jurassic World Dominion (2022), reconnecting with franchise stars Laura Dern and Jeff Goldblum.
Beyond the dinosaur franchise, Neill built a career spanning more than five decades, earning praise for his ability to move between drama, science fiction, thriller and fantasy.
His notable film credits include the cult classic Possession (1981), the Cold War submarine thriller The Hunt for Red October (1990), where he starred alongside Sean Connery, and Jane Campion’s Oscar-winning drama The Piano (1993).
On television, Neill delivered memorable performances in productions such as Reilly, Ace of Spies (1983), Merlin (1998), The Tudors (2007) and Peaky Blinders (2013–2014).
Tributes From Across Hollywood
Colin Trevorrow, director of Jurassic World Dominion, also paid tribute to Neill, describing him as a remarkable person whose presence influenced those around him.
“Sam Neill was a deeply soulful and beautiful man. He was a friend and collaborator at a challenging time, and his strength gave us all strength,” Trevorrow wrote in an Instagram tribute.
He also remembered Neill’s personality beyond his acting career.
“I’ll remember him for his tranquility, his love of wine, and for the calm assuredness he brought to his characters. It’s not every lifetime you get to befriend a legend. Forever grateful,” Trevorrow added.
Neill’s Final Years and Health Battle
Neill revealed in 2023 that he had been diagnosed in 2022 with stage 3 angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma, a rare form of blood cancer.
Earlier this year, the actor announced that he was cancer free. His family later confirmed that his death was “sudden and unexpected,” while also noting that he remained free of cancer before his passing.
Known for his quiet charisma, versatility and decades of memorable performances, Sam Neill leaves behind a legacy that extends far beyond Jurassic Park. His work across film and television established him as one of the most respected actors in international cinema, and his portrayal of Dr. Alan Grant ensured that generations of fans would continue to remember him.
