A group of early-built Boeing 777-9 aircraft originally intended for Emirates could find a new home with United Airlines, as the Chicago-based carrier reportedly examines the possibility of acquiring the jets and becoming the first US airline to operate Boeing’s next-generation widebody aircraft.

Emirates, the largest customer for the 777X programme, has declined to accept the first batch of aircraft produced for the Dubai-based airline, arguing that the jets would require extensive modifications before they could meet its delivery standards.

The rejected aircraft have remained parked for years while Boeing’s certification timeline for the 777-9 experienced repeated delays. United, which has not previously ordered the 777X, is now reportedly evaluating whether those aircraft could provide a quicker and potentially more cost-effective entry into the programme.

Why Emirates Rejected the Early-Build Aircraft

Emirates President Tim Clark has been vocal about the airline’s concerns regarding the first 777-9 airframes produced for the carrier.

The main issue, according to Clark, is that the aircraft have aged while sitting on the ground and no longer represent the standard Emirates expects from a new delivery.

He argued that the modifications required to bring the jets up to current certification and operational specifications would be too extensive, making them unsuitable for Emirates’ fleet strategy.

Clark compared the situation to a can of baked beans, using the analogy to highlight concerns about shelf life rather than the value of the aircraft itself.

Emirates is known for maintaining strict standards during aircraft acceptance and has previously rejected aircraft that did not meet its specifications. The airline has now applied the same approach to the delayed 777X programme.

Reports on the number of rejected aircraft vary, with early estimates suggesting around 10 airframes, while later figures placed the total at 11. The broader group of early-production 777-9 aircraft built before certification is believed to include about 20 jets.

Certification Delays Created a Fleet Backlog

Boeing originally produced several 777-9 aircraft ahead of schedule, expecting the model to enter commercial service around 2020.

However, that timeline changed significantly following the 737 MAX crashes, which led regulators—particularly the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA)—to increase scrutiny of Boeing’s aircraft development processes.

The 777X programme subsequently faced additional reviews involving systems, design elements and certification requirements. As regulatory expectations evolved, aircraft that had already been built under earlier assumptions remained grounded.

The prolonged delay created a difficult situation: the airframes existed physically, but the certification requirements surrounding them had changed, increasing the amount of work needed before they could enter service.

For Emirates, the delays have also complicated long-term fleet planning. The airline had expected the Boeing 777X, Boeing 787 Dreamliner and Airbus A350 to gradually replace portions of its Airbus A380 fleet, but every year of delay reduces the available transition window.

United Could Benefit From an Unusual Opportunity

For United Airlines, the parked aircraft present a rare opportunity.

The airline currently operates an all-Boeing widebody fleet, meaning the addition of another Boeing aircraft type would involve fewer training, maintenance and operational challenges compared with introducing an entirely new manufacturer.

The availability of already-built aircraft is another attraction. Rather than waiting years for new production slots, United could potentially receive the aircraft sooner if an agreement is reached.

Boeing also has a strong incentive to find a solution for the parked jets, potentially giving interested buyers greater negotiating power.

Reports from aviation analysts, including Leeham News and Analysis and DJ’s Aviation, have indicated that United is considering the possibility, although the airline has not officially confirmed any plans.

If the deal goes ahead, United would become the first US operator of the 777X family.

Why US Airlines Have Not Ordered the 777X

Despite the aircraft’s advanced technology and efficiency improvements, no major US airline has placed an order for the Boeing 777X.

The reason is largely linked to airline network strategies rather than concerns about the aircraft itself.

The 777-9 is designed as a very large-capacity aircraft, positioned as the successor to aircraft such as the Boeing 747 and Airbus A380. However, US carriers have increasingly moved toward smaller, more frequent widebody operations using aircraft such as the Boeing 787 and Airbus A350.

Major US airlines generally prefer adding frequency on international routes rather than operating fewer flights with extremely high-capacity aircraft.

The absence of large aircraft such as the A380 from US fleets reflects this approach. No US carrier has ever operated the A380, and the 777-9 represents a similar shift toward larger aircraft capacity.

Potential Routes for United’s 777-9 Fleet

If United eventually acquires the aircraft, the next major question would be where they would be deployed.

The 777-9’s size means it would likely be assigned to routes with consistently strong passenger demand.

Potential markets could include major international routes from hubs such as Newark, Washington Dulles and San Francisco, where United already operates high-volume transatlantic and Pacific services.

Adding the aircraft would represent a change in United’s widebody strategy, with the airline potentially relying more on larger aircraft for its busiest international routes.

Boeing Seeks Solution for Parked Aircraft

For Boeing, finding buyers for the early-production 777-9 aircraft is about more than completing individual sales.

The grounded airframes represent financial costs and serve as a visible reminder of the delays that have affected the 777X programme.

A successful transfer of the aircraft to another airline would help Boeing reduce its backlog of stored jets while restoring confidence in one of its most important future aircraft programmes.
