Alex Eala has little time to dwell on her latest defeat as the Filipino tennis star quickly turns her attention to the next challenge of her North American hard-court swing.
After nearly two weeks of demanding competition that culminated in a round-of-16 appearance at the Canadian Open, Eala is now headed to Ohio for the Cincinnati Open, where she is set to make her debut at the prestigious WTA 1000 event.
The transition from Toronto to Cincinnati will be a short one, but Eala is expected to have a brief window to rest and recharge before returning to competitive action.
Her status as the world No. 20 will work in her favour, as she is seeded in Cincinnati and will receive a first-round bye. The extra time could prove valuable after an intense run that saw her play several highly competitive matches in quick succession.
Eala admitted that she intends to use the break to take care of herself and temporarily step away from tennis.
“I definitely will take maybe two days off, a day or two. I do have to travel to Cincinnati. I need to get a haircut. I haven’t gotten a haircut in a while. My nails are grown out,” she said with a laugh following her 4-6, 0-6 loss to an in-form Belinda Bencic at Sobeys Stadium – Center court.
The 20-year-old also plans to spend some time with friends and enjoy activities away from the tennis court before resuming her busy schedule.
“I’ll do a couple things, just to get my mind off tennis. Yeah, reunite maybe with some friends in Cincinnati, and just try to have fun. I’ll be back on court like that, so I got to enjoy what I have. I got to enjoy the time that I have that I’m not on court,” added Eala.
She even snapped her fingers while making the point, highlighting just how quickly her short break will pass before she is required to compete again.
A Busy but Rewarding Stretch
Despite the disappointing result against Bencic, Eala can look back on the North American swing with plenty of positives.
The Filipino recently captured her first WTA Tour title in Washington, a breakthrough achievement that gave her considerable momentum heading into the Canadian Open.
She then extended her winning streak to a career-best seven consecutive matches, showing resilience through a demanding schedule.
At the Canadian Open, Eala battled through the round of 32 against American Caty McNally. The match was particularly challenging after she rolled her right ankle in the second set, but she managed to complete the victory and advance.
Her impressive run finally ended against Bencic, who produced a strong performance to defeat the Filipino 6-4, 6-0.
For Eala, however, the result does little to diminish what she achieved over the preceding two weeks.
“It’s always tough, of course, after a loss. But like I said, I’m looking back at these past two weeks as a really big positive. I think I’ve played really well. I’ve gotten through so many obstacles,” she said.
“Of course, right now there’s that initial, just kind of a little tired and down from the match.”
Eala Already Looking Ahead
While the immediate priority is rest, Eala is already focused on using the lessons from the Canadian Open and the preceding tournaments to improve her performances in Cincinnati and at the US Open in New York.
The hectic schedule has tested her physically and mentally, but she believes the experience will ultimately benefit her as she continues to establish herself among the world's leading players.
“But I mean, I’m healthy, which is something I’m super grateful for. It’s something that’s obviously on the top of my priority all the time. So, yeah, I’m counting my blessings. I’m taking the lessons that I’ve had from these two weeks and hopefully implementing them even more in a better way in Cincinnati and New York.”
With a first-round bye awaiting her in Cincinnati, Eala should have a little more time to recover before beginning another important chapter of her hard-court campaign.
After a breakthrough title in Washington and a deep run in Toronto, the Filipino sensation will now look to balance recovery with preparation as she continues her rise on the WTA Tour.
