Alphabet, the parent company of Google, has announced a major leadership restructuring within its artificial intelligence division, marking one of the biggest changes at Google DeepMind since the unit was formed.

Under the new arrangement, AI pioneer Demis Hassabis will step away from his daily managerial duties as chief executive of Google DeepMind and take on a broader strategic role as Alphabet’s chief scientist and chairman of the AI research unit.

The leadership shakeup also includes the departure of several prominent figures behind Google’s AI efforts, including veteran engineer Jeff Dean, along with Sanjay Ghemawat, Oriol Vinyals and Quoc Le, who are leaving to establish a new artificial intelligence research company called Discovery Loop.

The announcement comes at a critical period for Google’s AI ambitions, as the company faces increasing pressure from competitors such as OpenAI and Anthropic. Google’s next flagship Gemini model has yet to be released despite earlier expectations of a June launch, raising concerns among investors and industry observers that the search giant may be struggling to maintain its leadership position in the rapidly evolving AI race.

Following news of the restructuring, Alphabet’s shares dropped about 4%, reflecting market concerns about the implications of the leadership changes.

Hassabis Takes Strategic Role as AGI Efforts Intensify

Hassabis, who shared the 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his work related to artificial intelligence-driven protein research, said he would transition into a role focused on the future development of artificial general intelligence (AGI).

AGI refers to a highly advanced form of artificial intelligence capable of performing intellectual tasks at a level comparable to humans across a wide range of fields.

In a message to employees, Hassabis said the move would allow him to concentrate more deeply on long-term scientific research and the broader consequences of AGI.

Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai supported the transition, saying Hassabis was uniquely positioned to guide the company’s efforts toward the next generation of AI.

“(Hassabis) and I have been long discussing a role that allows him to put his full attention on actively shaping the future of AGI,” Pichai said in a company-wide memo.

“It’s work that is vitally important to Alphabet and humanity, and I can’t imagine a better person than Demis to do it.”

New Leadership Focuses on Commercializing Gemini

Taking over the daily operations of Google DeepMind will be Koray Kavukcuoglu, who currently serves as the company’s chief technology officer and Alphabet’s chief AI architect.

Unlike Hassabis, whose leadership has largely emphasized scientific breakthroughs and long-term research, Kavukcuoglu is expected to push the division toward stronger product development and commercialization.

A source familiar with Google’s internal operations said senior executives within Google Cloud welcomed the leadership change because of Kavukcuoglu’s closer involvement with efforts to integrate DeepMind’s technology into commercial products.

The move is expected to accelerate the transformation of Gemini into a more business-focused AI platform as Google competes with rivals that have moved quickly to bring advanced AI tools to consumers and enterprises.

An Alphabet spokesperson said Hassabis would focus on AGI research, strategy and the societal impact of advanced AI, while maintaining only a limited number of direct reports.

Top AI Researchers Depart to Launch New Startup

The restructuring also triggered a significant talent shift, with some of Google’s most recognized AI researchers leaving the company.

Jeff Dean, Sanjay Ghemawat, Oriol Vinyals and Quoc Le have departed to create Discovery Loop, a public benefit corporation focused on machine learning research, scientific discovery and engineering breakthroughs.

The startup has received investment from Google and will also partner with Google Cloud for computing resources.

Industry analysts described the departures as a major loss for Google’s AI division, given the researchers’ roles in developing technologies that shaped modern artificial intelligence.

“Google has a deep bench of talent but losing these four individuals will leave a mark for some time. Getting innovation and execution back online is not going to be easy and losing key contributors won’t make it any better,” said Brian Mulberry, chief market strategist at Zacks Investment Management.

Alphabet has not disclosed what specifically led to the leadership changes or why several departures happened at the same time.

Scientific Mission vs Commercial Pressure

The shakeup has renewed discussions about the long-standing tension between Google DeepMind’s scientific ambitions and Alphabet’s need to generate revenue from AI investments.

Some former colleagues of Hassabis have previously suggested that he prioritized scientific achievements over immediate commercial opportunities. Reports have indicated that Hassabis viewed major scientific breakthroughs, including Nobel Prize-level accomplishments, as central goals for DeepMind.

However, supporters within Google have rejected claims that he ignored business priorities, arguing that his long-term research strategy could ultimately create greater value for the company.

Hassabis has continued to emphasize AI’s potential to solve major global challenges, particularly in healthcare.

He said he plans to spend more time working with Isomorphic Labs, the drug discovery company he founded and continues to lead.

“I’ve always believed the No. 1 application of AI should be to improve human health,” Hassabis said.

“It’s time for AI to prove its unequivocal value to the world, and what better way to demonstrate that than to help finally cure diseases like cancer.”

Google’s AI Leadership Faces Growing Competition

Hassabis and Dean were regarded for years as two of Google’s most influential AI figures.

Hassabis co-founded DeepMind in 2010 before Google acquired the company in 2014 for about $650 million. Dean, meanwhile, helped establish Google Brain in 2011, a separate AI research group that later merged with DeepMind.

In 2023, following the rapid rise of ChatGPT, Google combined DeepMind and Google Brain into Google DeepMind, placing Hassabis in charge and naming Dean as chief scientist.

The restructuring came as Google attempted to respond to the growing influence of OpenAI and Anthropic.

Until recently, Dean, Vinyals and Noam Shazeer were among the key figures leading Gemini development. Google’s release of Gemini 3 last November was widely viewed as a major step toward closing the gap with competing AI models.

However, the company has since faced renewed pressure as competitors advanced and cheaper open-source AI models from China gained popularity.

At Google’s annual developer conference in May, executives highlighted Gemini’s lower operating costs rather than positioning it solely as the most advanced AI model available.

Continued Talent Competition in AI Industry

Google’s AI talent challenges have intensified in recent months.

Noam Shazeer left for OpenAI in June, less than two years after Google reportedly spent billions of dollars recruiting him and his research team from another startup.

Around the same period, John Jumper, who shared the Nobel Prize with Hassabis in 2024, announced plans to join Anthropic.

The industry has also seen continued movement among leading researchers, including those behind foundational AI breakthroughs. Vinyals, Le and former OpenAI chief scientist Ilya Sutskever were among the authors of a landmark 2014 research paper that helped establish the importance of scaling AI models through large-scale pre-training.

As Google attempts to balance scientific ambition with commercial urgency, the company’s latest restructuring represents a significant turning point for its AI strategy.

The coming months will reveal whether the leadership changes help Google regain momentum in the global AI race or create further uncertainty during a period of intense competition.
