Arsenal began their 2026/27 campaign in spectacular fashion on Sunday, sweeping aside Manchester City 3-0 in Cardiff to claim the 2026 Community Shield and lay down an early marker ahead of the new Premier League season.
The reigning Premier League champions produced a commanding performance from the opening whistle, combining intensity, attacking quality and defensive organisation to overwhelm a City side that struggled to find a response throughout the contest.
Riccardo Calafiori set the tone with an astonishingly early opener after just 24 seconds. Myles Lewis-Skelly created the opportunity with a perfectly timed pass into Calafiori's path, allowing the Italian defender to finish quickly and give Arsenal an immediate advantage.
City never appeared to recover from the early setback.
Havertz doubles Arsenal's advantage
Arsenal continued to dictate proceedings and were rewarded with a second goal when Kai Havertz headed past Gianluigi Donnarumma.
The German forward was picked out by debutant Christos Tzolis, who delivered an inviting ball for Havertz to meet and send beyond the City goalkeeper.
Tzolis, a £34 million summer signing, was one of the standout performers on an impressive Arsenal afternoon and added another assist to his promising pre-season form.
The Gunners remained in control after the interval and extended their lead shortly after the restart.
Captain Martin Odegaard reacted quickest inside the penalty area to tap home Arsenal's third, completing a move that again involved Tzolis and effectively putting the contest beyond City's reach.
City struggle for answers
For Manchester City, it was a difficult afternoon and an especially disappointing beginning for Enzo Maresca, who was taking charge of the club for the first time after replacing Pep Guardiola.
The Citizens appeared short of ideas in attack and struggled to match Arsenal's energy and organisation. Record £116 million signing Elliot Anderson was unable to make the desired impact, while Maresca made the bold decision to withdraw star striker Erling Haaland after only 53 minutes.
Arsenal, meanwhile, could have made the defeat even heavier.
Substitute Bukayo Saka came close when he struck the side-netting before later firing over from close range. The missed opportunities did little to diminish what was otherwise an outstanding display from Mikel Arteta's side.
Early warning to Premier League rivals
The Community Shield may not determine the destination of the Premier League title, but Arsenal's performance will have sent an unmistakable warning to their domestic rivals.
Having secured the league title last season, the Gunners are aiming to retain their crown while also improving on their previous Champions League campaign.
For Arteta, the victory provided an ideal start to those ambitions. More than the trophy itself, the manner of the performance offered encouragement, with Arsenal demonstrating the intensity and attacking confidence expected of a side determined to compete on multiple fronts.
Arsenal will begin their Premier League title defence on Friday night when they host Championship champions Coventry City.
Manchester City, meanwhile, will look to recover when they open their league campaign at home against Bournemouth next Sunday.
