The decision was reached on Wednesday following a Congress meeting of the union, coming shortly after the expiration of a 14-day ultimatum issued to the university management on August 11.
In a statement signed by the union’s Chairperson, Vincent D. Choji, and Secretary, Lomka Kopdiya, ASUU-PLASU said its concerns remained unresolved despite the deadline given to the institution.
The union said the strike would affect all academic activities and would remain in place until further notice.
Six demands remain unresolved
Among the issues raised by the lecturers is the commencement of the Contributory Pension Scheme for members.
The union is also demanding the full implementation of the 2025 Federal Government/ASUU agreement, including the payment of outstanding arrears dating back to January 1, 2026.
Other demands relate to the welfare and security of university staff. ASUU-PLASU is calling for the provision of safe and secure staff quarters and the construction of trenches around the university’s perimeter fence.
The union also wants what it described as the intimidation of union leaders to stop.
Another major issue is the payment of 22 months’ arrears of the 25/35 per cent wage award, which the lecturers said remains outstanding.
According to the statement, “Congress is convinced that the substance of our demands on all six items has not been satisfactorily addressed.”
Union directs members to stop work
ASUU-PLASU said the decision to embark on the industrial action followed approval from the National Executive Council of the Academic Staff Union of Universities.
The union subsequently directed all members to suspend academic activities until further notice.
The latest development could disrupt teaching, examinations and other academic programmes at Plateau State University as the union presses the university administration to address its outstanding demands.
The strike also highlights continuing concerns among university workers over the implementation of agreements, salary-related arrears, staff welfare and workplace security.
ASUU-PLASU said the action would remain in force until satisfactory progress is made on the issues contained in its six-point charter of demands.
