The initiative, organised to mark World Hepatitis Day 2026, is part of the organisation’s broader efforts to improve access to preventive healthcare and promote early detection, particularly in communities where regular screening and reliable health information may not be readily available.
During the outreach, community members received complimentary hepatitis tests and were educated on the causes, prevention, diagnosis and management of the disease. Participants were also encouraged to seek medical attention promptly when symptoms or other health concerns arise, as early intervention can help prevent complications.
Beyond the medical component of the programme, AXA Mansard Health also distributed relief packages to vulnerable families in the community, reinforcing the organisation’s focus on combining healthcare interventions with broader social impact initiatives.
According to AXA Mansard Health, “taking health education and screening directly to communities is critical to closing gaps in awareness and access to preventive services.”
The organisation’s approach reflects the growing emphasis on preventive healthcare in Nigeria, where early detection and timely treatment are increasingly recognised as important tools for reducing the human and financial costs associated with advanced illnesses.
Hepatitis, particularly when left undiagnosed and untreated, can lead to serious health complications. Expanding access to screening therefore gives individuals an opportunity to know their health status and seek appropriate care before the condition becomes more severe.
From an industry perspective, preventive interventions such as community-based screening can also help reduce long-term healthcare expenditure for insurers and health maintenance organisations (HMOs). Detecting and managing diseases at an early stage can limit the need for more expensive treatments and improve overall health outcomes.
The Bariga outreach therefore represents more than a one-day awareness exercise. It highlights the importance of taking healthcare services and credible health information directly to communities, especially populations that may face financial, geographical or informational barriers to accessing routine medical services.
AXA Mansard Health said its community-focused initiatives would continue to empower Nigerians with the knowledge and resources required to make informed decisions about their health. The organisation further stressed the importance of sustained public education and wider access to screening in preventing hepatitis from progressing into potentially life-threatening conditions.
The campaign also underscores the role of private-sector healthcare organisations in complementing government efforts to strengthen preventive services at the grassroots. As Nigeria continues to contend with challenges around healthcare affordability, accessibility and public awareness, greater cooperation among insurers, healthcare providers, government institutions and communities remains crucial to developing a more resilient and prevention-driven health system.
For AXA Mansard Health, the hepatitis awareness initiative forms part of its wider commitment to bringing healthcare closer to Nigerians while promoting a culture of early detection, informed health choices and preventive care.
By taking screening and health education directly into communities such as Bariga, the organisation is seeking to contribute to a healthcare model in which Nigerians are not only treated when they fall ill, but are also equipped with the information and services needed to prevent disease and protect their long-term wellbeing.
