Big Brother Naija reality star Bella Okagbue has opened up about her breakup with fellow former housemate Sheggz, saying she decided to speak after watching others tell the story of their relationship for her.

Okagbue, who had initially kept quiet about the circumstances surrounding the end of their relationship, explained that her decision to remain silent was driven by a desire to protect parts of their relationship from public scrutiny.

In a series of posts on her Instagram Story on Friday, the reality star said her silence should not be interpreted as an admission of wrongdoing.

“For the past few days, I have watched people tell my story for me. I stayed silent because I believed some things deserved to remain private, but my silence should never be mistaken for guilt,” she wrote.

The reality stars, who met during their time on the reality television show, became one of the most closely followed couples to emerge from the Big Brother Naija franchise.

Bella said her feelings for Sheggz had been sincere and that she remained committed to their relationship because she genuinely believed in what they shared.

She also revealed that she had agreed to give the relationship another chance because she believed in the possibility of personal growth and change.

“I loved genuinely. I defended the relationship because I believed in it at the time, and I chose to give someone I loved a second chance because I believe people can grow and change. That was my choice, and I own it,” Bella stated.

However, she stressed that believing someone can change does not mean a person must remain in a relationship indefinitely.

Her comments appeared to address the conflicting perceptions surrounding the couple, particularly the difference between what followers saw publicly and what she experienced privately.

“The person everyone experiences publicly isn’t always the person you experience privately,” she said.

‘A ring doesn’t fix what made a relationship impossible’

Bella also addressed conversations surrounding marriage and an engagement ring, pushing back against suggestions that her reported desire to marry Sheggz was motivated by desperation.

According to the reality star, wanting to marry someone she loved was a genuine expression of commitment, while recognising when a relationship should end required self-awareness.

“On marriage and the ring, let me be clear: wanting marriage with someone you love is not desperation. Knowing when not to marry them is discernment. Sometimes, it takes more courage to walk away than to stay. A ring doesn’t fix what made a relationship impossible.”

The statement comes amid online discussions over the former couple’s relationship and the circumstances that ultimately led to their separation.

Bella acknowledged that different accounts of what happened between them had circulated online but made it clear that she did not intend to reveal every detail of her experience.

Rather than engaging in a detailed public account of the relationship, she said she had chosen to draw a line around certain aspects of her private life.

The reality star maintained that she had invested deeply in the relationship, giving it love, loyalty and another opportunity to succeed. However, she said there eventually came a point when she had to put her own wellbeing first.

“I gave love a chance. I gave change a chance. I gave loyalty in abundance. But even loyalty has an expiry date when trust, respect and peace can no longer coexist with it,” she wrote.

‘Today, I choose myself’

Despite the breakup, Bella said she did not regret attempting to make the relationship work a second time.

Instead, she said the experience had reinforced her decision to recognise when continued effort was no longer beneficial.

“I don’t regret being the woman who chose to try again. I respect the woman I am today enough to know when trying again is no longer the answer. So today, I choose myself. I choose differently, regardless of what comes with it,” she concluded.

Her comments signal a deliberate decision to move forward while maintaining boundaries around the private details of her relationship with Sheggz.

For Bella, the message was less about revisiting every disagreement and more about reclaiming the right to tell her own story, while acknowledging that walking away can sometimes be an act of self-respect rather than failure.
