Manchester United manager Michael Carrick has urged his players to remain calm after a disappointing start to the Premier League season, insisting that the club will not abandon its plans following a shock 2-0 defeat to newly promoted Hull City.
United arrived at the MKM Stadium with expectations of mounting a serious title challenge after finishing third last season. Those ambitions, however, suffered an early setback as Hull produced a spirited display to secure a memorable victory on their return to the top flight.
Goals from Semi Ajayi and Nobel Mendy gave the hosts a dream start to their Premier League campaign and left United facing immediate questions over their preparedness for the demands of a title race.
Hull's performance was particularly impressive given that the newly promoted side went into the match without 10 players because of injuries. Rather than being intimidated by United's status and expectations, Hull played with confidence and punished their visitors for failing to impose themselves on the contest.
For Carrick, however, the result was not reason to abandon the club's long-term plans or respond with an emotional reaction.
“It is not a nice feeling but it is not going to change our direction as a team or a club,” Carrick said.
Carrick calls for calm
The United manager acknowledged that his team would have to improve, particularly when confronted by opponents employing different tactical approaches.
Despite the disappointing opening-day result, Carrick rejected the idea of allowing frustration to create unnecessary tension within the squad.
“We just don’t all have to shout and scream and create some chaos. Calmness doesn’t mean there is not emotion,” he added.
His comments reflected an attempt to keep the defeat in perspective while acknowledging the areas in which United must improve.
The loss nevertheless provides an early warning for a side expected to compete at the top end of the Premier League. United's inability to break down Hull and their failure to respond effectively to the hosts' approach will inevitably attract scrutiny as the season progresses.
Hull savour dream return
For Hull, the victory could hardly have been a better way to mark their return to English football's top division.
The club had last featured in the Premier League in 2017, making their opening-day success over one of the league's established heavyweights a significant statement of intent.
The result also demonstrated the unpredictability that newly promoted teams can bring to the opening stages of a Premier League season. Despite their injury problems, Hull showed no fear and capitalised on their opportunities to claim all three points.
United, meanwhile, must now turn their attention to the response.
With title ambitions already attached to Carrick's team before a ball was kicked, another disappointing result could increase the pressure considerably. A strong reaction in the coming matches would therefore be important not only for their league position but also for restoring confidence and momentum.
Carrick, however, appears determined to avoid allowing one defeat to dictate the direction of United's campaign.
The message from the manager is clear: disappointment is understandable, but panic is not the answer. For a team with ambitions of challenging for the Premier League title, the real test will be how quickly it learns from the setback and responds on the pitch.
