Afrobeats superstar David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has spoken about his family’s long-standing tradition of pursuing education abroad, revealing that the practice dates back several generations.
The award-winning singer made the revelation during a recent interview that has attracted attention online, where he discussed his upbringing, family background and the influence of international exposure on his life and career.
According to Davido, his grandfather placed strong emphasis on education and ensured that his children had opportunities to study outside Nigeria, particularly in the United States.
“My grandfather was a senator, and most of his children were sent to America for their education. My dad went to university in Kentucky,” he said.
The singer explained that overseas education has remained a significant part of his family’s culture, noting that similar practices are common among many financially established African families seeking global academic opportunities for their children.

Davido also shared insights into his multicultural family heritage, revealing that his parents met in London before eventually building a family with strong ties to both Nigeria and the United States.
He said his mother was from Edo State, while his father is Yoruba, with Igbo ancestry through his grandmother.
The singer added that his mother later travelled to the United States to pursue a master’s degree, further strengthening the family’s connection with international education and experiences.
