Lagos came alive with a celebration of Yoruba history and cultural heritage on Sunday as the much-anticipated historical epic, King Kosoko, The Battle for Lagos, received its world premiere at IMAX Cinema, Lekki.
The premiere, held on August 23, 2026, attracted traditional rulers, high chiefs, members of the Kosoko royal family, Nollywood stars, cultural custodians and other distinguished guests, who gathered to celebrate a film centred on one of the most defining periods in the history of Lagos.
Produced by Teqsus Studios, the event provided an opportunity for stakeholders in the traditional institution, entertainment industry and cultural sector to witness the cinematic retelling of the story of Oba Kosoko and his struggle for influence, leadership and the preservation of Lagos’ sovereignty.
King Kosoko, The Battle for Lagos explores the political and economic tensions that shaped Lagos during a period marked by intense competition for power and control. The film examines Lagos’ relationship with the Benin Empire, the struggle for commercial dominance and the influence of external powers during the colonial era.
It also delves into the broader historical circumstances surrounding regional politics, trade and the transatlantic slave trade, while highlighting the efforts to protect Yoruba identity, cultural values and the sovereignty of Lagos.
At the heart of the story is Oba Kosoko, whose leadership and political strategy are portrayed against a complex backdrop of rivalry, betrayal, shifting alliances and resistance to opposing forces.
The filmmakers said the production was conceived as both a historical drama and a celebration of Yoruba heritage, with the aim of introducing contemporary audiences to an important chapter of Lagos history through the power of cinema.
The film was directed by Adebayo Tijani and produced by Ayo Ajayi and Segun Olojo-Kosoko. Marc Adebesin served as co-producer, while Kemi Anibaba was the line producer.
The production features an ensemble cast comprising some of Nigeria’s prominent actors, including Femi Adebayo, Tina Mba, Odunlade Adekola, Femi Branch, Jide Kosoko, Yinka Quadri, Dele Odule, Gabriel Afolayan, Adeniyi Johnson, Sola Kosoko, Aisha Lawal and Kola Ajeyemi, among others.
The presence of members of the traditional institution and representatives of the Kosoko royal family at the premiere further underscored the cultural significance of the project and its attempt to bring a historic royal conflict to a modern audience.
Following its Lagos premiere, King Kosoko, The Battle for Lagos is scheduled to open in cinemas across Nigeria on Friday, August 28, 2026.
The nationwide release is expected to give moviegoers an opportunity to engage with the historical drama while exploring the political struggles, cultural heritage and royal legacy that helped shape the history of Lagos.
