Pogba joined Monaco last summer on a two-year agreement, marking his return to professional football after serving an 18-month suspension for a doping violation. His comeback, however, has been affected by injury, restricting him to limited playing time during his first season with the French club.
There had been expectations that the former France international would enjoy a more prominent role this campaign as he continued his return to full fitness. However, the arrival of Filipe Luis as Monaco’s new head coach, replacing Sébastien Pocognoli, appears to have prompted a reassessment of the club’s midfield options.
According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Monaco have informed Pogba’s representatives that they would like to bring the contract to an end before September 1, allowing the midfielder to find another club during the current year.
“AS Monaco offer contract termination to Paul Pogba. Club want to mutually terminate his deal by September 1st to let Paul find a new club this year. Decision up to Pogba (now injured) but AS Monaco informed his camp,” Romano reported on X on Wednesday.
The proposal would give Pogba the opportunity to leave Monaco without waiting for his current agreement to expire, although the final decision rests with the player and his representatives.
Pogba’s return to football followed a difficult period away from the game. He was initially handed a four-year suspension after testing positive for dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) following a doping test in August 2023.
The midfielder maintained that the positive result was not deliberate, arguing that he had unknowingly taken a supplement containing the banned substance.
His case was subsequently reviewed by the Court of Arbitration for Sport, which reduced the suspension to 18 months. The ruling enabled Pogba to resume professional football in March 2025 and eventually led to his move to Monaco.
Despite the significance of his return, injuries have prevented the 2018 World Cup winner from establishing himself as a regular presence in the Monaco side. The club’s latest move could now bring his brief spell in the principality to a premature conclusion.
Should both parties reach an agreement, Pogba would become available to consider offers from other clubs, potentially opening another chapter in a career that has been marked by major achievements as well as significant setbacks.
The 33-year-old midfielder would then face an important decision over the next destination of his career as he attempts to regain consistency and continue his comeback at the highest level.
