Nigerian media personality and television host Morayo Afolabi-Brown has opened up about the early years of her marriage, revealing that her husband was unemployed when they got married.

Speaking while sharing her views on respect, leadership and financial responsibilities in marriage, Morayo explained that she took care of the family’s finances during the first few years of their union.

According to her, however, her husband’s lack of employment did not affect the respect she had for him or diminish his position within the family.

The media personality argued that while financial provision is an important part of marriage, a man’s role as a husband should not be defined solely by his ability to provide money.

She maintained that leadership, decision-making and the ability to inspire confidence are also important qualities that can shape the dynamics of a marriage.

“Money is important, but that’s not what makes your husband a husband. It’s the ability to lead. The first few years, I was doing everything. But you would never know. Not because of what I did, but because of how he carried himself,” she said.

Morayo explained that her husband continued to play an active leadership role in the home despite the financial circumstances they faced at the time.

“When it comes to the house, he takes decisions, we discuss. So even though things are not financially, I still respected him because he was a man’s man,” she added.

She further emphasised the importance of confidence and mutual respect in sustaining a marriage, noting that financial circumstances can change over time.

“What is good is good, but that leadership, I believe in you. It’s important to us,” she stated.

Her comments highlight a perspective on marriage in which financial responsibility is only one aspect of a husband’s role. For Morayo, the ability to provide direction, make decisions in consultation with one’s partner and command respect can remain important even when a couple is going through financial difficulties.

The media personality’s disclosure also offers a glimpse into the less visible challenges that can accompany the early stages of marriage, particularly when couples are building their careers and financial stability together.

Her experience underscores her view that the contributions of spouses to a marriage can take different forms at different stages, with financial provision being just one of several factors that influence how partners support and respect each other.
