Investment will support power, cooling and computing infrastructure as demand for AI capacity surges

Nvidia has taken a minority stake in privately held Cloverleaf Infrastructure as the chipmaker deepens its involvement in the infrastructure needed to support the rapid expansion of artificial intelligence data centers across the United States.

The companies announced the investment on Friday, saying the partnership will help accelerate the development of sites capable of supporting large-scale AI computing projects. Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

Cloverleaf Infrastructure specializes in developing the critical infrastructure required for data centers, working with utilities, energy providers and investors to secure electricity and other resources needed to bring large projects online.

Under the agreement, Cloverleaf will focus on developing and preparing sites, while Nvidia will contribute its technology and expertise to infrastructure buildouts designed for AI computing.

The partnership comes as technology companies and data center developers race to secure sufficient power, land and cooling capacity to meet soaring demand for AI infrastructure.

Cloverleaf, founded in 2024, said it has already delivered multiple gigawatt-scale projects across North America. Its work includes coordinating the energy and infrastructure requirements necessary for large data center developments.

As part of the partnership, Cloverleaf will deploy Nvidia's DSX platform, which is designed to help optimize decisions involving data center site selection, power availability, cooling systems and computing infrastructure.

The move reflects Nvidia's expanding role beyond the manufacture of advanced AI chips. As demand for its processors has driven a massive expansion in AI computing, the company has increasingly become involved in the broader ecosystem required to deploy those systems at scale.

The Wall Street Journal reported earlier on Friday that Nvidia was expected to invest several hundred million dollars in Cloverleaf Infrastructure, citing people familiar with the deal. The companies did not disclose the size of Nvidia's investment.

The Cloverleaf transaction also follows another major infrastructure investment by Nvidia. Just days earlier, Nvidia said it would invest $1.5 billion in SB Energy, a data center developer owned by Japan's SoftBank Group.

The investments underscore the growing importance of energy and physical infrastructure in the AI race. Powerful AI systems require enormous amounts of computing capacity, and that capacity in turn depends on data centers with access to reliable electricity, sophisticated cooling systems and suitable sites.

For Nvidia, which has emerged as one of the central suppliers of chips powering generative AI, partnerships such as the one with Cloverleaf could help address infrastructure constraints that threaten to slow the deployment of new AI computing capacity.

Cloverleaf's focus on utilities, energy providers and investors positions the company at a critical point in the data center development chain, where securing power can determine whether proposed AI projects can move from planning to construction.

The partnership therefore gives Nvidia a closer role in decisions made well before AI servers are installed, including where facilities should be built and how their power and cooling requirements can be met.

With AI investment continuing to expand across the U.S., the availability of electricity and data center capacity is becoming an increasingly important factor for companies seeking to build and operate next-generation computing systems.
