UACN, Wema Bank, NEM Insurance, Jaiz Bank, NGX Group, Cornerstone Insurance make weekly watchlist

Nigerian equities could remain under pressure this week as investors continue to lock in gains following a strong run in the domestic stock market, with profit-taking particularly evident across energy and banking counters.

The market has delivered a 53.8 per cent return so far this year, prompting some investors to reduce their positions and realise accumulated gains amid concerns that valuations in some stocks may have moved ahead of their underlying fundamentals.

Market analysts are therefore expecting another period of heightened volatility, with investor sentiment likely to be influenced by the release of more half-year 2026 earnings and the performance of major banking stocks.

“We expect the equities market to remain volatile this week, with the overall performance tilted towards the negative,” Meristem Securities said in a market note ahead of the week.

The investment firm added that investors could remain cautious following the varied reactions to companies’ H1 2026 results.

“The mixed reaction to recent H1:2026 earnings could also keep investors cautious, with further profit-taking likely in stocks where valuations have moved ahead of our fair values,” it said.

Against this backdrop, six stocks have emerged on the weekly investment watchlist based on a combination of fundamental strength, valuation metrics and technical indicators.

The stocks are UACN, Wema Bank, NEM Insurance, Jaiz Bank, Nigerian Exchange Group and Cornerstone Insurance.

UACN

UACN leads the weekly selection on the strength of its fundamentals.

The conglomerate has a net profit ratio (NPR) of 3.8 per cent and a price-to-earnings (PE) ratio of 22.7 times. Its 14-day relative strength index (RSI) stands at 51.6.

The company’s inclusion reflects the view that its underlying financial performance provides a basis for investor interest despite the broader market’s current volatility.

Wema Bank

Wema Bank is another stock attracting attention, supported by its fundamentals and its position below its estimated intrinsic value.

The lender has an NPR of 30.5 per cent and a PE ratio of just 1.1 times. Its 14-day RSI is 47.4.

The relatively low PE ratio could appeal to value-oriented investors looking for stocks that appear inexpensive relative to their earnings, although market participants will still need to consider the bank’s earnings outlook and broader market conditions.

NEM Insurance

NEM Insurance also makes the list, with the insurer drawing attention for its fundamentals and valuation.

The company has an NPR of 9.3 per cent and a PE ratio of 5.9 times, while its 14-day RSI is 48.5.

Its inclusion is based partly on the assessment that the stock is trading below its intrinsic value, potentially providing room for investors seeking value opportunities within the insurance sector.

Jaiz Bank

Jaiz Bank features among the stocks to watch on account of its strong fundamentals.

The non-interest lender has an NPR of 28.5 per cent and a PE ratio of 12.4 times. Its 14-day RSI stands at 47.7.

The bank’s positioning on the watchlist comes as investors continue to assess opportunities across Nigeria’s banking industry ahead of additional half-year earnings releases.

Nigerian Exchange Group

Nigerian Exchange Group (NGX Group) also makes the selection based on its fundamental outlook.

The company has a PE ratio of 20.7 times, while its 14-day RSI is 30.5.

The RSI reading places the stock in a relatively weak technical position compared with some of the other stocks on the list, potentially making it one to watch as investors assess whether recent price movements have created an opportunity.

Cornerstone Insurance

Cornerstone Insurance rounds off the six-stock selection, with its fundamentals and recent price performance supporting its inclusion.

The insurer is trading at its lowest price in 52 weeks, a development that could provide an attractive entry point for investors who believe the stock’s current valuation does not fully reflect its underlying prospects.

Cornerstone Insurance has an NPR of 33.3 per cent and a PE ratio of 8.2 times, while its 14-day RSI stands at 36.6.

Earnings season to shape sentiment

Beyond individual stocks, the release of additional H1 2026 results is expected to be a major driver of market activity this week.

In particular, investors are watching for earnings from most of the country’s Big Five banks. Their results could influence sentiment across the financial sector and provide fresh signals about the health of corporate earnings amid changing market conditions.

The divergent reactions to companies that have already released their half-year results suggest that strong earnings alone may not guarantee share-price gains. Valuation, expectations and the extent of previous price appreciation are likely to remain important considerations.

With the market already up sharply for the year, investors may continue to balance the prospect of further gains against the risk of a deeper correction as profit-taking persists.
