Warner Bros.’ The End of Oak Street, starring Anne Hathaway and Ewan McGregor, opened with $2.5 million from Thursday previews. The film follows two suburban residents who are mysteriously transported back to prehistoric times.
Among this weekend’s new releases, the film is expected to lead the pack with an estimated $20 million to $30 million domestically. Warner Bros. is taking a more conservative view, projecting an opening of between $18 million and $23 million in North America, alongside another $20 million to $25 million internationally.
With a production budget of more than $80 million, however, the film has a sizeable financial hurdle to clear. Its prospects will likely depend on whether strong reviews and audience word-of-mouth can help it maintain momentum throughout the summer.
At the top of the chart, Spider-Man: Brand New Day is expected to remain the box office leader for a third consecutive weekend. The Marvel and Sony release is projected to earn between $65 million and $70 million domestically, representing a decline of roughly 55% from its previous weekend.
The film is also closing in on the $2 billion mark worldwide. After only 12 days in cinemas, it had already become the highest-grossing film of the year, reaching approximately $1.68 billion globally.
Paw Patrol: The Dino Movie is expected to open in third place after collecting $1.9 million from previews. The animated family film is projected to generate around $20 million over the weekend.
That would put its opening in the same range as 2023’s Paw Patrol: The Mighty Movie, which debuted with $22 million and eventually grossed $205 million worldwide against a $30 million production budget.
The new instalment carries a higher production cost of approximately $40 million, with the expense shared between Paramount and Spin Master. Its performance will therefore be closely watched as the studios assess the latest big-screen outing for the popular children’s franchise.
Meanwhile, Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey is projected to add between $17 million and $20 million during its fifth weekend in theatres.
Several other new films are expected to have quieter openings. The Wrong Girls, The Rivals of Amziah King and The Brink of War are each projected to generate single-digit box office totals, leaving the weekend’s major battle largely between the returning superhero blockbuster and the two dinosaur-focused releases.
