The American sisters, who have won the women’s doubles title at Flushing Meadows twice, received a wildcard entry from the United States Tennis Association (USTA) for this year’s tournament.
Their return together comes after a lengthy break from Grand Slam doubles competition. The last time the sisters partnered at a major was the 2022 US Open, which also marked Serena’s final tournament before she announced that she was “evolving away” from professional tennis.
Serena returns to Grand Slam action
Serena, 44, made an unexpected return to competitive tennis earlier this year, partnering in doubles at the Queen’s tournament in June.
She was subsequently awarded a wildcard for the Wimbledon women’s singles event, where she suffered a three-set defeat to Australia’s Maya Joint.
Serena lost the match 6-3, 6-7 (6-8), 6-3 and later sustained a knee injury that forced her to withdraw from the Wimbledon women’s doubles competition, where she had been scheduled to play alongside Venus.
She has since continued her comeback, including an appearance in the US Open mixed doubles competition with Carlos Alcaraz. The pair won their opening match in New York before being eliminated in the quarter-finals.
Williams sisters reunite again
Venus, 46, has continued to make occasional appearances on the WTA Tour in both singles and doubles in recent years.
The sisters reunited earlier this month at the Cincinnati Open, although their comeback ended with a three-set defeat by Marta Kostyuk and Peyton Stearns.
Their US Open reunion will be another opportunity for the pair to revive one of the most successful doubles partnerships in tennis history.
Together, Venus and Serena have won 14 Grand Slam doubles titles, with their most recent major triumph coming at Wimbledon in 2016.
Despite that success, they have played together at only two Grand Slam tournaments since then — the 2018 French Open and the 2022 US Open.
A historic doubles partnership
The Williams sisters won their second Grand Slam doubles title together at the US Open in 1999, defeating the defending champions to claim their first major doubles crown in New York.
They returned a decade later to win the tournament again, adding to a remarkable collection of major doubles victories.
Remarkably, Venus and Serena have never lost a Grand Slam doubles final in which they have played together.
Their latest campaign at Flushing Meadows is scheduled to begin on either Thursday, September 3, or Friday, September 4.
Venus has also received a wildcard for the women’s singles tournament, which begins on Sunday, August 30.
Venus eyes another deep doubles run
The elder Williams sister enjoyed a strong doubles run at last year’s US Open, reaching the quarter-finals alongside Canada’s Leylah Fernandez.
Their campaign ended with a defeat against top seeds Katerina Siniakova and Taylor Townsend.
This year, however, Venus will have her sister alongside her as the Williams duo once again take centre stage in New York.
For fans, the reunion offers another chance to see one of the sport’s most celebrated sibling partnerships compete together on one of tennis’ biggest stages.
