Family entertainment channel to premiere popular drama on September 7.
WAPTV has expanded its international programming portfolio with the acquisition of broadcast rights to the popular Indian romantic drama series, Rajjo, becoming the first television channel in Nigeria to air the series.
The acquisition is part of the family entertainment channel’s efforts to strengthen its position in Nigeria's increasingly competitive broadcasting industry by offering audiences a wider selection of premium and family-friendly content.
Rajjo, which has attracted a substantial following in India, follows the story of an aspiring athlete from Uttarakhand whose ambitions are tested by circumstances surrounding her family, particularly her mother, Manorama, who is troubled by a dark past.
The series combines romance, family conflict and personal ambition, with its storyline exploring the challenges faced by its central character as she pursues her dreams while navigating complicated family relationships.
WAPTV said the series would be aired fully dubbed and subtitled in English, making it accessible to its Nigerian audience.
‘Painstakingly’ Pursued Rights
Speaking on the acquisition, Wale Adenuga Jnr, Director of WAPTV, said the station had spent years pursuing the broadcast licence before finally securing the rights.
“After years of painstakingly pursuing the broadcast licence of the hit show ‘Rajjo’, we were delighted when we acquired the rights,” he said.
Adenuga said the series fitted into the channel's programming philosophy and its commitment to providing entertainment that can be enjoyed by members of the entire family.
“The series is tailor-fitted to our core values at WAPTV- to provide wholesome, family-friendly entertainment that will keep our audiences glued to their screens, both on TV and mobile.”
Series to Premiere September 7
The acquisition gives WAPTV the distinction of becoming the first Nigerian television channel to broadcast Rajjo, further expanding its catalogue of international content.
The series is scheduled to make its Nigerian television debut on Monday, September 7, 2026, on WAPTV.
The channel said the addition of the Indian drama was aimed at giving viewers fresh entertainment choices while maintaining its focus on content considered suitable for family audiences.
The arrival of Rajjo also highlights the growing appetite for international television productions among Nigerian viewers, as broadcasters increasingly look beyond traditional local programming to attract and retain audiences across television and digital platforms.
With the new acquisition, WAPTV is seeking to combine the popularity of an established international drama with its own family-oriented programming strategy as competition for viewers continues to intensify.
