In a special edition of CNN's African Voices, host Lamide Akintobi takes viewers back on the road, revisiting some of the standout moments from CNN's digital series My Drive, where some of the biggest names in music and entertainment share the stories behind their success. From the streets of Lagos to Miami, the episode features memorable conversations with Rick Ross, Spyro, Kah-Lo, Falana and Chella, offering viewers an intimate look at the people behind the music.
Among the highlights, international hip-hop star Rick Ross reflects on his admiration for African music talent, “It was always genius, and to me nowI sit back and enjoy it, I really feel it’s only the beginning”. Nigerian singer Spyro also opens up about the faith that guides both his life and career, “Every day I am thankful. I want to be able to change people’s life’s through the way I live”.
The programme then revisits Akintobi's conversation with singer-songwriter Kah-Lo, who explains why authenticity has been central to her success during her rise to fame. "I was in between jobs and borrowed 20 dollars from my sister, I went to this session with this guy I met from Twitter and we recorded two songs. The song came out and boom, two Frammy nominations, it thrust me into this whole thing I didn’t have time to prepare for”.
Meanwhile, Falana showcases her trademark humour during a spirited discussion about her driving style. "I'm a road rager. I am a rager, but I'm a responsible rager," Falana jokes during her drive with Akintobi.
Akintobi later asks Falana what type of music inspired her to pursue it as a career, “My parents moved to Canada, they were intentional about what music we were listening to growing up. I was also listening to soul music, a lot of pop music as well”. Akintobi then asks what drivers her, “There is something about being on stage, it is such a gift, and I don’t take it lightly.”
The episode also features Afrofusion artist Chella, who discusses transforming a childhood passion into a flourishing music career. “I have always known this is what I wanted to do. You feel it.” The episode later explores Larry Madowo’s interview with Maina Kageni about his experience and career as a media personality from Kenya.
