For years, professionals such as doctors, lawyers and judges occupied the top tier of South Korea’s highly competitive matchmaking market. But the rapid expansion of the AI industry and the extraordinary performance of the country’s semiconductor giants are changing what many singles consider an attractive career.
Employees at companies such as Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix, particularly those working in memory chips and AI-related fields, are increasingly being viewed as desirable potential partners, helped by generous compensation packages and the financial security associated with working for two of the country's biggest technology companies.
“Recently, we’ve seen increased preference for people working in semiconductor companies such as SK Hynix and Samsung Electronics, as well as AI-related occupations,” said a spokesperson for Korean matchmaking company Gayeon.
The shift comes as South Korea's semiconductor industry enjoys an extraordinary stock-market run. Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix both entered the trillion-dollar club earlier this year, while their shares have risen by roughly 95% and 135%, respectively, so far this year.
The companies' soaring fortunes have also translated into substantial rewards for some employees.
SK Hynix last year agreed to distribute 10% of its operating profit among employees. Based on Reuters calculations, that amounted to roughly 700 million won per employee — slightly more than $500,000 — a figure that was more than 15 times the average annual salary earned by South Koreans last year.
Employees in Samsung's memory-chip division are also benefiting from the company's compensation arrangements, although their payouts are expected to be somewhat lower than those received by their counterparts at SK Hynix.
The growing appeal of semiconductor workers reflects a broader financial reality in South Korea, where marriage is increasingly being viewed not only as a personal commitment but also as a potential economic advantage.
South Korean media has coined the term “wedding leverage” to describe the idea that combining two incomes can make it easier for couples to afford expensive housing deposits, accumulate savings or build investment portfolios in a country where housing and living costs have placed significant financial pressure on younger generations.
For some semiconductor workers, however, the attraction of a potential partner is no longer simply a matter of salary or corporate affiliation.
“Our clients who work in semiconductor-related jobs are now also showing a tendency to look at a wider range of factors in a potential partner, not just occupation or finances,” the Gayeon spokesperson said.
Chip workers enter the spotlight
The newfound popularity of Samsung and SK Hynix employees has also spilled into South Korea's entertainment industry.
A dating reality show produced by YouTube channel Teo brought together employees from the two semiconductor giants. The programme, which aired on Aug. 13, attracted around 650,000 views, reflecting the growing public fascination with the people working inside companies at the heart of the AI boom.
“The content was intended to focus on the hectic daily lives of office workers, using dating, a relatable topic, to offer familiarity and fun,” a spokesperson for Teo said. “The timing also aligned well with the two companies’ boom driven by AI, which helped resonate with a broader audience.”
The semiconductor boom has similarly found its way into mainstream entertainment and investing culture.
Netflix last month released a variety programme, “Rookie Kim’s Stock Market Mission,” following a popular comedian as he navigates the world of stock trading. The programme opens with the comedian purchasing shares in SK Hynix — a choice likely to resonate with South Korea's large community of retail investors.
Retail investors play an unusually prominent role in the country's financial markets, with roughly one in four South Koreans participating in the market, according to the report.
AI reshapes university ambitions
The influence of the AI boom is not limited to dating and popular culture. It is also changing the way South Korean students think about higher education and career prospects.
At Seoul National University, widely regarded as the country's most prestigious university, electrical and computer engineering has surged in popularity as students increasingly connect the field with lucrative opportunities in artificial intelligence and semiconductors.
The change is particularly striking among students who enter the university without initially declaring a major.
This year, nine out of 10 undeclared-major students at the university's College of Engineering chose electrical and computer engineering, compared with only two out of 10 in 2023, according to university data.
The numbers illustrate how quickly AI and semiconductors have become intertwined with perceptions of career success.
“Korean students aren’t simply chasing ‘AI’ as an abstract theme — they’re chasing a specific, visible, domestic pipeline into hardware divisions like Samsung’s and SK Hynix’s,” Lim said.
These companies offer “clearer and more immediate rewards” of having a stable, regular positions at large companies than just another career, she said.
The trend highlights the unusually broad social impact of South Korea's semiconductor industry. What began as an investment and technology story is increasingly becoming a story about status, marriage, education and the aspirations of an entire generation.
As AI continues to drive demand for advanced chips, the prestige attached to semiconductor careers could extend even further — influencing not only where South Koreans invest their money, but also whom they date, what they study and how they imagine their economic future.
