The aircraft, an A320neo, was handed over to China Eastern Airlines on Wednesday, marking the start of operations at the newly expanded Airbus industrial site in northern China.
The milestone strengthens Airbus' manufacturing network in one of the world's fastest-growing aviation markets and gives the European aircraft manufacturer additional capacity to meet rising demand from Chinese airlines and customers elsewhere in the region.
The second Tianjin assembly line was inaugurated in October 2025 and is expected to significantly increase Airbus' A320 Family production capacity in China.
It complements the company's original Tianjin assembly line, which opened in 2008 as Airbus' first commercial aircraft Final Assembly Line outside Europe.
Since beginning operations, the original facility has assembled and delivered more than 800 A320 Family aircraft.
China accounts for more than a fifth of global demand
The expansion comes as Airbus anticipates enormous growth in China's commercial aviation market over the next two decades.
According to the company's latest Global Market Forecast, China is expected to require 8,830 new passenger aircraft over the next 20 years.
That figure represents more than 20% of the 42,060 new passenger aircraft Airbus forecasts will be required globally during the same period.
The scale of projected demand makes China a strategically important market for Airbus and helps explain the company's decision to increase its local production capacity.
The additional Tianjin line is also intended to make Airbus' global manufacturing system more flexible, allowing the company to serve customers in China and other markets while expanding production of its popular A320 Family aircraft.
Tianjin becomes a bigger part of global network
With the addition of the second Tianjin line, Airbus now operates 10 Final Assembly Lines worldwide.
Four are located in Hamburg, Germany, while Toulouse, France, and Mobile, Alabama, each have two. Tianjin now also has two assembly lines.
The expansion reinforces China's position within Airbus' global industrial system rather than treating the country solely as an important aircraft sales market.
The A320 Family, which includes the A320neo, is one of the world's most widely used families of commercial passenger aircraft. The neo generation incorporates newer engines and other technologies designed to improve fuel efficiency compared with previous versions.
China Eastern deepens four-decade Airbus partnership
The first aircraft from the new Tianjin line was delivered to China Eastern Airlines, one of Airbus' longest-standing customers in China.
China Eastern received China's first Airbus aircraft — an A310 — in 1985, beginning a partnership that has continued for more than four decades.
The airline has since built one of the largest Airbus fleets in the Chinese mainland.
As of the end of August 2026, China Eastern operated 393 A320 Family aircraft, alongside 56 A330 Family aircraft and 20 A350-900 aircraft.
The delivery of the first A320neo assembled on the second Tianjin line therefore represents not only an expansion of Airbus' manufacturing capacity, but another milestone in its longstanding relationship with one of China's major airlines.
As Airbus increases production in Tianjin, the company is positioning the facility to play a larger role in meeting China's expanding demand for new aircraft while further integrating the country into its global manufacturing network.
