The branch announced the suspension in a statement signed by its Chairperson, Terseer Abari, and made available to journalists on Sunday.
The union said the decision was reached after negotiations yielded progress and some of the issues that triggered the industrial action were resolved.
Following the decision, members of the union have been directed to return to their official duties.
“Consequently, the Congress directed all members of the Branch to resume their official duties with effect from Friday, 11th September 2026,” the statement read in part.
The suspension brings to an end the industrial action that began on August 12, 2026, over the non-payment of two allowances owed to academic staff.
Dispute Over Allowances
The FUAM branch had embarked on the strike to demand full payment of its members’ Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance and Professorial Allowance.
The union maintained that the outstanding payments were central to the welfare of its members and formed the basis of its “No Pay, No Work” position.
Announcing the suspension, however, Abari said developments during negotiations had provided sufficient grounds for the union to direct its members back to work.
He commended members for their resilience, unity, patience and commitment throughout the four-week dispute.
According to him, the outcome of the struggle once again demonstrated the importance of collective action and solidarity in advancing the legitimate interests and welfare of university workers.
Union Pledges Continued Engagement
Abari also acknowledged the role of the university administration during the dispute, expressing appreciation for its cooperation and efforts towards resolving the issues.
He said the union remained willing to sustain constructive engagement with the university management on matters relating to staff welfare, members’ interests and the continued development of the institution.
While announcing the suspension, the branch urged members to return to their responsibilities with renewed commitment and dedication.
The union also reaffirmed its commitment to the principles and traditions of ASUU, saying it would continue to defend the legitimate interests and welfare of its members through collective bargaining and constructive engagement.
Students, Supporters Thanked
The ASUU branch further expressed appreciation to students, members of the public, stakeholders, organisations and individuals who supported the union or demonstrated understanding during the period of the industrial action.
The suspension means academic activities at the Federal University of Agriculture, Makurdi can resume following the four-week disruption, while the union’s continued engagement with management is expected to focus on outstanding welfare concerns and the implementation of agreements reached during the negotiations.
