Professor Ayodeji Olawunmi Badejo, the newly appointed 10th substantive Vice-Chancellor of Lagos State University (LASU), formally assumed office on Monday, September 21, 2026, signalling the beginning of a new administration at the institution.

Badejo arrived at the university amid a warm reception from members of staff, who gathered in large numbers to welcome her to the institution.

With an air of seriousness, firmness and readiness for the responsibilities ahead, the new Vice-Chancellor commenced her first official day with a brief address to the university workforce.

In her interaction with members of the LASU community, Badejo expressed appreciation for the warm reception and reaffirmed her commitment to maintaining an open-door policy throughout her administration.

The pledge is expected to provide members of staff with direct access to the Vice-Chancellor as the university begins another phase of its institutional development.

Shortly before addressing the workforce, the new Vice-Chancellor inspected a guard-of-honour mounted by the LASU security outfit in her honour in front of the Babatunde Raji Fashola Senate Building.

The inspection was accompanied by enthusiastic aluta chants from members of the university community, adding a distinctly LASU character to the formal commencement of her tenure.

The occasion also featured prayers representing different faith traditions.

The Chief Imam of the LASU Muslim Community, Professor Qudus Amuni, led the Islamic prayer session, while the Chaplain of the LASU Chapel, Professor Ayo Ayodele, offered prayers from the Christian tradition. Mr Olajuwon Oluwa also led the traditional prayer session.

Badejo's assumption of office comes after a decade of institutional development under successive administrations at LASU, with the university recording a number of initiatives and transformations across different areas of its operations.

Her emergence as the institution's 10th substantive Vice-Chancellor therefore comes with expectations from staff, students, alumni and other stakeholders for continuity in areas where progress has been recorded, while also introducing fresh ideas to address emerging challenges.

Her decision to emphasise an open-door leadership approach at the outset of her tenure could also set the tone for closer engagement with the university's workforce as her administration settles into office.

With the new Vice-Chancellor now formally at the helm, attention will turn to how her administration translates its vision into policies and programmes capable of advancing teaching, research, innovation, staff development, student welfare and the broader institutional goals of Lagos State University.

Badejo's assumption of office thus marks the beginning of another chapter in LASU's continuing institutional journey, with the university community looking ahead to a period of sustained development and transformation.
