DStv is ushering in a new chapter in South Africa with a major overhaul of its subscription packages, the introduction of new channels and a refreshed brand identity following Canal+’s takeover of its parent company, MultiChoice.

The pay-TV platform unveiled its new direction on Monday, September 7, announcing that subscribers will soon see a simplified package structure under a new slogan, “Expect+.”

The rebranding forms part of efforts to reposition DStv under French media giant Canal+, which acquired MultiChoice at the end of 2025 in a deal reportedly valued at more than R50 billion.

The change comes as MultiChoice seeks to revive its struggling operations and respond to rapidly changing viewing habits. Earlier this year, Canal+ announced a R1.9 billion “boost plan” aimed at supporting the turnaround of the media group.

A major component of the strategy is simplifying DStv’s subscription structure, which the company acknowledged had become increasingly complicated after years of overlapping packages.

The new offering, which DStv describes as a “new era for DStv,” will consolidate the platform’s options into five principal packages: Starter, Select, Sports, Movies & Series, and Premium.

The new packages are scheduled to launch on September 17.

Simpler packages, more targeted content

Speaking about the overhaul, MultiChoice CEO Wellington Ngwepe said the existing packages had been in place for about 15 years and were no longer adequately reflecting how customers consume television.

“We’ve engaged with customers and heard the message loud and clear. They want more value and a simplified offering,” he said.

Ngwepe said the new structure was designed around specific customer preferences rather than trying to bundle too many different types of content into overlapping packages.

“What we are providing is something built around customer needs, rather than overlapping packages that try to be something for everybody,” he added.

Under the new structure, DStv will also introduce a dedicated sports package, a standalone offering focused on movies and series, as well as a lower-cost entry-level option.

New channels and revamped sports offering

DStv said the changes would not be limited to packaging, with the platform also expanding and reshaping its channel line-up.

Among the new additions are entertainment channel Wethu+ and sports channel SuperSport Kickoff.

The company is also strengthening its movie offering through channels including M-Net Movies+, M-Net Movies Stars and M-Net Movies Legends.

Several sports channels will be renamed as part of the revamp. These include SuperSport Football Plus, SuperSport Africa, SuperSport Extra and SuperSport Extra 2.

Third-party channels such as France24 and Church TV will also form part of the new offering.

The changes are intended to give subscribers more clearly defined choices, particularly those who may want access to specific types of content without paying for a broader package.

Satellite prices remain unchanged

Despite the extensive changes to DStv’s packages, the company said subscribers using its traditional satellite service should not expect a price increase as a result of the overhaul.

Ngwepe stressed that the newly announced prices relate specifically to the streaming packages.

“We haven’t changed our pricing. The price points stay the same. The [new] pricing is specifically for the streaming offering, but the DTH pricing has not changed,” he said.

New DStv package prices

The new structure will see subscribers choose from five packages, with prices ranging from R99 to R799 per month.

Package Channels Monthly Price
Starter 85 R99
Select 100 R299
Sports 115 R399
Movies & Series 115 R500
Premium 130 R799

The Starter package, priced at R99 per month, will offer 85 channels and include selected sports content. DStv describes it as a “taster” of the platform’s broader offering.

The Select package will cost R299 monthly and provide access to 100 channels, with a wider selection of sports programming.

At R399 per month, the new Sports package will feature 115 channels and provide significantly more sports content while retaining some entertainment programming.

For viewers primarily interested in entertainment, the Movies & Series package will cost R500 per month. It will also carry 115 channels, with a stronger focus on movies and series, including M-Net, kykNET and M-Net Movies+.

The Premium package remains the most comprehensive option at R799 per month. It is also the only legacy DStv package to retain its existing name and will provide 130 television channels.

With the changes due to take effect from September 17, DStv is betting that a simpler package structure, expanded content and its new “Expect+” identity will help the platform attract and retain subscribers as viewing habits continue to shift towards streaming and more specialised content choices.
