Nigeria’s Falconets have booked their place in the quarter-finals of the 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup after defeating England 3-0 in a dominant Round of 16 encounter in Poland on Thursday.
The Nigerian side delivered an impressive performance at Stadion Miejski in Bielsko-Biała, scoring once in the first half and twice after the break to eliminate England and keep their pursuit of a first world title alive.
Tosin Rafiu opened the scoring in the eighth minute, giving Nigeria an early advantage after a fast start.
England were presented with a major opportunity to draw level before half-time when they were awarded a penalty. However, Nigeria goalkeeper and captain Christiana Uzoma stood firm, saving Rachel Maltby’s effort and preserving the Falconets’ advantage.
Nigeria took a 1-0 lead into the interval.
Falconets turn up the pressure after break
The second half began with Nigeria immediately extending their advantage.
Just two minutes after the restart, Seimeyeha Janet Akekoromowei found the back of the net to put the Falconets 2-0 ahead and leave England facing a difficult task.
England attempted to respond and reduce the deficit, but Nigeria remained composed and defended their advantage.
The Falconets eventually put the contest beyond doubt in the 73rd minute when Mary Mamudu scored the third goal.
With England unable to find a response, Nigeria comfortably saw out the remaining minutes to secure their place among the tournament's final eight teams.
The result also represents another impressive turnaround in Nigeria's campaign after a difficult start to the competition.
From slow start to goal-scoring surge
Nigeria entered the knockout phase after finishing second in Group F with four points.
The Falconets began their group campaign with a 2-0 defeat to Spain before playing out a goalless draw against China. They needed a strong result in their final group match and responded emphatically, defeating New Caledonia 10-1.
That huge victory secured their progression to the Round of 16, where they were drawn against England, who finished third in Group B.
Nigeria have now scored 13 goals in their last two matches, a remarkable turnaround after failing to score in their opening two group fixtures.
The 10-1 victory over New Caledonia provided the attacking spark, and the Falconets carried that momentum into their knockout encounter against England.
Title dream remains alive
The victory keeps Moses Aduku’s team on course for what would be Nigeria’s first U-20 Women’s World Cup title.
The Falconets have previously reached the final of the competition twice, finishing as runners-up on both occasions. Their latest victory gives them another opportunity to go one step further and compete for the trophy.
With the quarter-finals now secured, Nigeria will turn their attention to the next stage of the tournament as they continue their bid to make history in Poland.
After overcoming England with three unanswered goals, the Falconets enter the last eight with renewed momentum and confidence.
